Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Dragon School is a renowned preparatory school with a reputation for producing pupils who go on to England's major public schools, but in which English city is the Dragon School located?

Answer: Oxford

The Dragon School was originally founded in 1877 by a group of Oxford dons who, in honour of St George, titled themselves as "the Dragons". The school was originally named as simply the Oxford Preparatory School - a preparatory school, also known as a "prep school", is an independent primary school for children up to the age of 13 whose task is to prepare children to undertake a Common Entrance Examination for entry into an independent secondary school (such as Eton, Harrow or Winchester).

In 1886, Charles Cotterill Lynam became headmaster, a position he retained for nearly 40 years, with his family for many years responsible for the running of the school.

Although it became Lynam's during the period of the Lynam family's stewardship, over time the name of the original group of founders was adopted as the name of the school itself. Notable former pupils of the Dragon include poet laureate Sir John Betjeman, Sir John Mortimer QC, and Nobel laureates Sir Tim Hunt (Physiology or Medicine) and Sir John Kendrew (Chemistry).
2. HMS 'Dragon' was commissioned in 2012 as one of the most advanced warships in the Royal Navy. Of which class is 'Dragon' a part?

Answer: Type 45 destroyer

HMS 'Dragon' was ordered in December 2000 as the fourth of the planned first batch of six Type 45 destroyers. The Type 45 was ordered as the Royal Navy's new air defence ship, fitted with the SAMPSON multi-function radar, claimed to be the world's most advanced, and armed with the Sea Viper anti-aircraft missile system. Construction of 'Dragon' began in November 2005, initially at the Scotstoun yard on the Rover Clyde, before the modules under construction were moved to a slipway further up the river at Govan. 'Dragon' was launched on 17 November 2008, the antepenultimate ship of the Royal Navy to enter the water via a dynamic launch (where the hull slides into the water). 'Dragon' was commissioned on 20 April 2012.

As launched, the ship featured a large red Welsh dragon painted on each side of her bow, which was removed during her first refit in 2014.

In 2016, the dragons were restored to the ship's bow following an appeal for funding from the ship's company.
3. The Dragons is the name of one of the professional rugby teams formed in 2003 by the Welsh Rugby Union. Which pair of clubs agreed to join forces to create the team?

Answer: Newport and Ebbw Vale

In 2003, the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) introduced a plan to revamp its professional domestic game. At the time, the top flight of Welsh rugby was the Celtic League, a competition featuring four Irish and three Scottish provincial sides, plus nine Welsh club sides.

The WRU believed that nine professional top level clubs was unsustainable in a country the size of Wales, and so presented plans to introduce a total of five regional sides based around a number of local clubs. One of these teams, representing an area of south-east Wales encompassing Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire and Newport, was formed following agreement between Ebbw Vale RFC and Newport RFC.

Initially intended to be named simply as "Gwent Dragons", the owner of Newport protested and threatened to withdraw his financial support unless the name of his club were included.

The name was changed to "Newport and Gwent Dragons", before finally becoming simply Newport Gwent Dragons, with its home games played at Newport's Rodney Parade ground, and its squad initially coming from the Ebbw Vale and Newport teams of the 2002 season.

In 2017, as part of the WRU plan to remove geographical nomenclature from its regional sides, the team dropped "Newport Gwent" from its name, becoming simply the Dragons.
4. The 'Crew Dragon' is a type of manned spacecraft designed to transport astronauts to the International Space Station, but which company was responsible for its development?

Answer: SpaceX

The 'Crew Dragon' is a variant of the SpaceX Dragon 2 spacecraft, developed as a reuseable platform for transporting astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS). In 2011, NASA began the Commercial Crew Program, a project intended to transfer the responsibility for human spaceflight in Low Earth Orbit away from NASA itself to private companies.

As part of the program, two companies were selected to develop, manufacture and operate spacecraft - SpaceX and their 'Crew Dragon', and Boeing's entrant, the 'Starliner'.

The first manned 'Crew Dragon' flight, using spacecraft C206 'Endeavour', began on 30 May 2020, when mission Crew-Dragon Demo 2 launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida carrying astronauts Douglas Hurley and Robert Behnken to the ISS. 'Endeavour' remained at the ISS for 62 days, returning with the crew on 2 August 2020.
5. Many countries depict an animal on their national flag, but only one country's flag features a dragon. Which country?

Answer: Bhutan

The national flag of Bhutan is divided diagonally from the lower hoist to the upper fly, with a yellow upper triangle and orange lower triangle. In the centre of the flag is a white dragon carrying four jewels. The dragon is a traditional symbol in Bhutanese mythology, and alludes to the native name for Bhutan in Dzongkha, "Druk Yul", meaning "dragon country".

The first flag was designed in 1947 at the request of Jigme Wangchuck, the second Druk Gyalpo (king) of Bhutan, and was square, featuring a different dragon, coloured green.

The dragon was redesigned at the request of Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the third Druk Gyalpo, in 1956, while the flag's proportions were changed from square to 2:3 in 1969 to allow it to fly better. The Constitution of Bhutan states that yellow symbolises the temporal authority of the Druk Gyalpo, while orange represents the Bhutan's Buddhist spiritual tradition, while the dragon covering the two halves equally in the centre shows the equal importance of the spiritual and temporal traditions in Bhutan.

Although Wales also features a dragon on its flag, Bhutan is the only independent country to do so.
6. The novel "Red Dragon" was the first appearance of the character of Hannibal Lector. In 1986, this was adapted for the first time into a film, which was given the title "Manhunter". Which actor played Lector in this film?

Answer: Brian Cox

"Red Dragon" was originally published in 1981, and sees former FBI profiler Will Graham brought out of retirement in an effort to catch a violent serial killer nicknamed 'The Tooth Fairy'. For help, Graham turns to Dr Hannibal Lector, a brilliant psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer, whom Graham had previously caught.

The novel was adapted in 1986 into a film called "Manhunter", starring William Petersen as Will Graham and Brian Cox as the renamed Hannibal Lecktor. When Cox auditioned for the role, the casting agents in the interview asked the actor to face away from them, in order to focus on his voice, the power of which was a major consideration for director Michael Mann in finding someone to play the part. Cox went on to base his performance on the character of Peter Manuel, a serial killer in Cox's native Scotland during the late 1950s.

A second adaptation of "Red Dragon", using the novel's original title, was released in 2002, starring Anthony Hopkins as Lector and Edward Norton as Will Graham.
7. The Komodo dragon is the world's largest living lizard, and is native only to the island of Komodo. Of which country is Komodo part?

Answer: Indonesia

The Komodo dragon is a type of monitor lizard capable of growing up to three metres in length and weighing as much as 70kg. The Komodo dragon is a dominant predator, capable of hunting mammals, birds and invertebrates. It has glands in its lower jaw that indicate it may have a toxic bite, although it has also been indicated that they actually secrete an anticoagulant.

The Komodo dragon is native to a number of islands in the Lesser Sunda chain of islands, the largest of which, Komodo, gives the Komodo dragon its name. Komodo was originally used as a prison island by the Dutch, as it formed part of the Dutch East Indies, which became the Republic of Indonesia following the Second World War.

The population of Komodo numbers around 2000, and is made up of descendants of the original convicts who went on to mix with Buginese people from Sulawesi.
8. Y Fenni, also known as Red Dragon, is a Welsh cheese consisting of cheddar blended with ale and which type of seed?

Answer: Mustard

Y Fenni is a blended cheese primarily made using mature cheddar, which is then mixed with Welsh ale and mustard seed. The name 'Y Fenni' comes from the Welsh language name of the town of Abergavenny, a market town in Monmouthshire in the south-east of Wales. Y Fenni cheese gets its nickname, 'Red Dragon', from the fact that the cheese is formed into cylinders of approximately 3lb, which are then coated in red wax.

The red dragon is a traditional symbol of Wales, and is featured on the country's flag.
9. In the 1992 film "Mr Baseball", Tom Selleck plays a baseball player who moves from the New York Yankees to Japan to play for the Chunichi Dragons. This is a real team which plays in which Japanese city?

Answer: Nagoya

The Chunichi Dragons is a professional baseball team that plays in the Central League, one of the two major leagues of Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan. The franchise was founded in 1936 as the Nagoya Club, before being purchased by the newspaper Chunichi Shimbun in 1946, with the present name being used from 1954.

The same year, the Dragons won their first Japan Series title, defeating the Nishitetsu Lions by four games to three. The team then had to wait 53 years for their second title, winning the 2007 Japan Series against the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters 4-1, ending the longest Japan Series drought in the history of Nippon Professional Baseball.

In "Mr Baseball", Jack Elliott, a former World Series MVP, is traded by the New York Yankees to the Chunichi Dragons, where he initially has trouble fitting in, but eventually regains his form, leading to his almost breaking the record for consecutive home runs. Rather than use fictional teams, the film sees many of the real teams of Nippon Professional Baseball take part in the action, with the Dragons seen playing games against all but two of their Central League rivals during the course of the film.

Many of the baseball scenes were filmed at Nagoya Stadium, the home of the Dragons until 1997.
10. The Order of the Dragon was a chivalric order founded in the 15th century by Sigismund of Luxembourg. At the time of its foundation, Sigismund was king of which country?

Answer: Hungary

The Order of the Dragon was founded in 1408 as a chivalric order for monarchs and selected nobles of high-birth by Sigismund of Luxembourg, the son of Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. Sigismund attained the crown of Hungary shortly after marrying Queen Mary of Hungary in 1387.

In addition to Hungary, Sigismund's marriage also made him King of Croatia, while he subsequently also became King of Germany in 1411, King of Bohemia in 1419 and King of Italy in 1431, before becoming Holy Roman Emperor in 1433.

He occupied all of these positions until his death in 1437. Sigismund founded the Order of the Dragon as his personal order of knights following victory in the Battle of Dobor against the nobility of Croatia. The order's aim was to defend Hungary from enemies foreign and domestic, ensure the supremacy of the Catholic Church and, most importantly, fight the Ottoman Empire. Membership of the Order of the Dragon numbered 21 on its foundation, which was extended to 24 in 1418.

Although the order lost significance, particularly in Western Europe, following Sigismund's death in 1437, the emblem of the dragon was retained on the coats of arms of many Hungarian noble families, while Vlad II of Wallachia, who was appointed to the order in 1431, took the dragon title as part of his sobriquet, becoming known as Vlad Dracul ('Vlad the Dragon').
