FITBs - Proper Vs. Improper Use Quiz

One of the biggest problem areas is the fill-in-the-blank question format. This quiz demonstrates the WHY behind the rules we enforce for FITBs. Questions 6 - 10 show how questions 1 - 5 could be rewritten according to the Quiz Creation Guidelines.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although this phrase was never penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, his character, Sherlock Holmes, is famous for it:

Answer: Elementary, my dear Watson!

Did you get this one wrong? Most people will, unfortunately, that is why we do not allow the use of punctuation in FITBs. This is a particular problem in the Movies, TV, Music, and Entertainment categories, where a lot of time the written punctuation depends on the quizmaker's perception of HOW a particular phrase was said.
2. Where is Paris?

Answer: Europe

This question is AMBIGUOUS; it is uncertain and open to interpretation. I meant Europe, but quiztakers might answer "France", "Earth", or even "Across the channel from England"! They're all valid answers. That is why FITB questions must be unambiguous.
3. Which actor and actress starred as lovers in the movie, "Shakespeare in Love?"

Answer: Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes

In order to get this question right, you would have had to put the actors' names in the same order that I did. In this case, I would have needed only to add two additional acceptable answers putting Joseph Fiennes first, but when you get into three or four answers, plus alternate spellings... yikes! FITBs may have ONLY ONE correct answer.
4. From "Somewhere Over the Rainbow": "Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue..." What's the next line? (Ends with the word "true".)

Answer: and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true

Did you get this one? Most people probably know the line from this song, but twelve words is a lot to get through without typos, or mixing up the words. For most categories, FITB answers are not allowed to exceed four or five words.
5. Which Disney movie featured Jonathan Taylor Thomas as the voice of the young Simba?

Answer: "The Lion King"

Did you think to put your answer in quotation? If you did, did you use double quotes (") instead of single quotes (')? Movie, television, music and other titles should NOT be in quotation as FITB answers.
6. Although this phrase was never penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, his character, Sherlock Holmes, is famous for it: "_______, my dear Watson."

Answer: Elementary

Since I've asked for only one word of the phrase in this question, the quiztaker doesn't need to guess how to punctuate it. It's already done for them in the question.
7. Of what country is Paris the capital?

Answer: France

This question is no longer ambiguous. For one thing, you know I mean the CAPITAL CITY Paris, and not Paris, Arkansas (for example). Secondly, you know that I'm looking for a COUNTRY as an answer, and not a continent, planet, etc.
8. Which actress starred as Shakespeare's lover in the movie, "Shakespeare in Love?"

Answer: Gwyneth Paltrow

Asking for just one answer, I only need to accept two versions of the correct answer: one with both her names, and one with just her surname. Simple and uncomplicated!
9. From "Somewhere Over the Rainbow": "Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high/There's a land that I heard of once, ... ... ...". Finish the line:

Answer: in a lullaby

Three words isn't nearly as hard to remember as twelve! Additionally, three (or four or five) words will usually fit in the blank provided when the quiz is played, so it's easy to check to see if you've made typos before submitting.
10. Which original movie starred Keanu Reeves as Thomas A. Anderson/Neo?

Answer: The Matrix

This question follows Quizzyland rules by accepting the answer without quotation. Compare the percent of correct answers for THIS question to the number of correct answers for its mate, question 5. I hope this quiz has helped explain why we have these rules for FITB questions. Ultimately, it's for your own enjoyment, and that of other quiztakers (nobody likes getting questions wrong!) :) Have fun, and keep creating!
