Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ask a 1900s child. My granny was born in 1899. What did she say tealeaves were useful for, apart from making tea?

Answer: Cleaning carpets

When my granny was young, damp tealeaves used to be scattered over mats and carpets and then swept up. It was said to help "lift" the dust.
2. Ask a 1920s child. What was a flapper?

Answer: A young woman

A flapper was a Bright Young Thing in the 1920s. She wore flapper dresses, may have smoked, and probably danced the Charleston.
3. Ask a 1930s child. My mum was born in 1926. Which of the following events didn't happen in her lifetime?

Answer: Invention of television

The Sydney Harbour Bridge was opened in 1932, when my mother was nearly six. Queen Elizabeth was crowned in 1953, so she should remember this. The first official airmail from Australia to Great Britain went out in 1931, and John Logie Baird invented television in 1923, which was three years before my mum was born. (Someone did inform me that Philo Farnsworth from Utah invented TV before J.L. Baird... I haven't been able to check this so far, but it did happen before 1926.)
4. Ask a 1930s child. My dad was born in 1921. He had a good singing voice as a young man in his early 20s, so what kind of singer might he have been?

Answer: A crooner

Dad could not have been a mezzo soprano, because that's a female voice. He couldn't have been a rocker in his early 20s, because rock 'n' roll came in the 1950s, when Dad was in his 30s. Rap came in later still, but crooners appeared in the 1940s.
5. Ask a 1960s child. I was born in the late 1950s. Which of the following dresses would I have worn as a teenager?

Answer: All three

The mini skirts of the 1960s gave way to the maxis and midis of the '70s, and I wore them all! A mini was a skirt that ended above the knee, a maxi was ankle length and a midi came below the knees.
6. Ask a 1960s child. Who were Corky and White Shadow?

Answer: A girl and her dog

Corky and White Shadow were a girl (played by Darlene Gillespie) and her dog. They starred in a serial shown on the Mickey Mouse Club when I was young.
7. Ask a 1980s child. Who or what was Voltron?

Answer: A cartoon character and a toy

Voltron was a cartoon character of the transformer type. The toy based on the character was all the rage one Christmas.
8. Ask a 1980s child. What was "Potty Pigeon"?

Answer: A computer game

"Potty Pigeon" was a computer game. A pigeon flew along to the strains of the theme music from "All Creatures Great and Small", and collected twigs for its nest. It dropped bomb-like eggs and tried to avoid ghost birds and centipede-like monsters.
9. Ask a 2000s child. Who or what is Kissin' Kate Barlow?

Answer: A character in the film "Holes".

Kissin' Kate Barlow is a character in the film "Holes". Wild West outlaw Kate is played by Patricia Arquette. "Holes" is based on the book by Louis Sacher.
10. Ask a 2000s child... Two main characters in the movie "Holes" are called what?

Answer: Zero and Stanley

Stanley Yelnats is at Camp Green Lake and makes friends with homeless Zero. At the end of the film, Stanley and Zero go home together.
