The crime took place in 1959 in Holcomb, Kansas. Truman Capote investigated the crime for four years.

The novel was first published in chapters in The New Yorker magazine and in January 1966 it was published as a book. In 1967, the film "In Cold Blood", based in Truman's book, was produced and directed by Richard Brooks, starring Robert Blake, Scott Wilson and others.
