"The Elegance of the Hedgehog" is a novel written by professor of philosophy and writer Muriel Barbery (1969-), which was published in 2006 and translated into more than forty languages.

The story involves the residents of an upper-middle class apartment building located on one of the most elegant streets in Paris. The building has eight apartments occupied by bourgeois families. The widow Renée Michel, the concierge, has been in charge of the building for 27 years, and lives a discreet and humble life as expected from a concierge. However, she is in fact a person of refined taste and excellent knowledge. The story develops when an unstable teenager, Paloma Josse, who lives in the building, becomes close to Renée.

In 2007, Cate Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush reprised their roles in the sequel "Elizabeth: The Golden Age".
