Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, Martin Short.

Answer: 3

These three actors were the stars of "Three Amigos" (1986). Three silent movie actors travel to a Mexican town for a public appearance. They are mistaken for their screen characters and asked to protect the village against a marauding bandit. This comedy is in essence a parody on "Seven Samurai" (1954) and "The Magnificent Seven" (1960).
2. Margaret Thatcher

Answer: 10

Margaret Thatcher, as did Prime Ministers before her and after, lived at Number 10 Downing Street. It is over 300 years old and has 100 rooms. The Prime Minister's residence occupies the third floor-- a kitchen in the basement. The bulk of the other parts are offices, conference, reception, sitting, and dining rooms.

The Prime Minister works with government ministers, national leaders. Foreign dignitaries are met and entertained.
3. Little Foys

Answer: 7

Eddie Foy Sr, headed up a vaudeville act in 1910 called "Eddie Foy and the Seven Little Foys". They quickly became a national sensation. As the children matured and left the troop, his third wife produced replacements so the act continued until the mid-1930s. His son, Eddie Foy Jr. had a long radio, television, and movie career.

The film "Eddie Foy and the Seven Little Foys"(1955) was nominated for best screenplay at the 1956 Academy Awards. Bob Hope played Eddie Foy in what was his best dramatic performance.
4. Kurt Vonnegut

Answer: 5

"Slaughterhouse-Five", subtitled "The Children's Crusade: A Duty-Dance with Death"(1969) is considered Kurt Vonnegut's masterpiece. It is many things. It is a satire on war, it is science fiction, and it recounts the Allies' firebombing of Dresden during World War Two. We see the events through the eyes of Billy Pilgrim who travels through time and relives his life. Pilgrim is a middle-aged optometrist who becomes 'unstuck in time'. Michael Sacks played Billy Pilgrim in the 1972 film version that came a little short of capturing the full essence of the novel.
5. Harry Nilsson

Answer: 1

Harry Nilsson wrote and composed "One Is the Loneliest Number" in 1966. Three Dog Night brought it high in the charts in 1969.

"One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
Two can be as bad as one
It's the loneliest number since the number one."

Nilsson had several hits but this and "Everybody's Talking at Me" from "Midnight Cowboy"(1969) are his most familiar.
6. Black Sox

Answer: 8

The Black Sox scandal of 1919 was focused on the 1919 World Series and alleged that the several White Sox players were bribed to throw games. The film "Eight Men Out" tries to trace the moves of the gamblers and their hangers-on to the pockets of the players. Chick Gandil, Eddie Cicotte, Happy Falsch, Joe Jackson, Fred MacMullen, Swede Risberg, Buck Martinez, and Lefty Williams were banned from major league baseball.

Two of these are still controversial. "Shoeless" Joe Jackson is alleged to be a skillful athlete but not a Rhodes scholar. Whether he fully understood what the money was for is not clear. He had the highest batting average in the series and fielded flawlessly. Buck Martinez knew what was going on, accepted no money, but failed to blow the whistle on his teammates.
7. Three Squared

Answer: 9

When you square a number you multiply it by itself. Therefore, 3 times 3 equals 9.
8. Amusement Parks

Answer: 6

Six Flags is the largest Amusement Park organization in the world. Not all the parks carry the Six Flags banner as several were acquisitions. I found 13 parks in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In addition there are seven water parks. Further plans include expansion into China, Dubai, and Saudi Arabia. Income is estimated at 1.4 billion dollars.
9. Binary Numbers

Answer: 2

There are two binary numbers--0 and 1.

This is the way it was explained to me. When you turn on your lights in your home, the electrical circuit is closed and the light bulb lights up. That is a '0. Later, when you turn it off, it is '1' as circuit is open. A computer wends its way through a maze of open and closed circuits to get the information you want.

That's perhaps simplistic but it helps.
10. Apocalypse

Answer: 4

"The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" are described by John in the last book of the New Testament--Revelations. Scholars and theologians differ on the interpretation of these cryptic images. Here are some general beliefs about the Horsemen.

The White Horse symbolizes the Antichrist.
The Red Horse symbolizes War.
The Black Horse symbolizes Famine and Pestilence.
The Pale Horse is Death.
