Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our oldest son's name is the fourth largest county in England, located in the South West region. It was one of the first areas of England settled following the end of the last ice age. It used to have "shire" on the end of it, but is now just my son's name. What is it?

Answer: Devon

Devon, the county, used to be known as Devonshire. Devon, our son, has James as his middle name. Trying to decide between Devon with an "i" or an "o", we decided to go with the English spelling vs. the Gaelic spelling since my husband is English. Kent is an English county but it is the south easternmost county.
2. Besides being the year our oldest son was born, it also saw the Euro become the new European currency, the Panama Canal was returned to Panama control, and the Columbine High School massacre occurred. What year was it?

Answer: 1999

Other happenings in 1999: Y2K hysteria was also running high as generators sold out in stores and Prince Rogers Nelson's (aka Prince) song "1999" was about to be become outdated. The founder of amazon.com, Jeffrey Preston Bezos, is Time's Person of the Year.
3. Garbage trucks, garbage trucks, garbage trucks. My son was fascinated with them for several years. He knew every type and every company that operated in our town. Which of the following is NOT a type of garbage truck?

Answer: Forklift tow-motor

Front loaders are used for both residential and businesses. Automated side loaders are for residential. Grapple trucks are used for large bulky items such fallen trees, furniture, and refrigerators.

In 1937, George Dempster invented the Dempster Dumpster system which wheeled waste containers were mechanically tipped into garbage trucks. His containers were known as dumpsters, which led to the word dumpster entering the language.
4. Alas, he has finally outgrown his garbage truck years. He has moved onto NASCAR. His favorite driver became the first third-generation NASCAR champion when he won the first of his back-to-back Busch Series titles in 1998. Who is he?

Answer: Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Earnhardt's roots in racing begin with his maternal grandfather, Robert Gee, who was a renowned NASCAR fabricator and mechanic. His grandfather, Ralph Earnhardt, was voted as one of NASCAR's 50-best all-time drivers in 1999. His father, Dale Earnhardt, was a seven-time Cup champion.

It was a toss-up between NASCAR, Star Wars, soccer and fishing for the question since Devon likes them all. But he wanted it about NASCAR.
5. Our oldest son is a pretty typical oldest child. He is the most serious (except when he is doing his rock singer imitation) and follows and enforces the rules. He can be considered all of the following except the one that is the antonym for obedient. Which word is that?

Answer: recalcitrant

Per Webster, recalcitrant is defined as obstinately defiant of authority or restraint. Devon is definitely not that! Even as a 1 year old, truly one "don't touch that" and we never had to tell him again!
6. It is time for child #2! His name was originally on the top of our list for our first son but as I sat with baby book in hand, I watched the horrific scenes of the Columbine High School shootings play out on TV. For weeks I heard our first choice in names used because it was the name of one of the shooters, whose last name was Klebold. I couldn't use it at that time. But time has passed. I didn't want the tragedy to be the final decision on the name so it pops back to the top of our list for our second son. What name is it?

Answer: Dylan

Dylan Scott. Actually, the name Dylan has become so popular that our Dylan shares it with 3 other boys in his grade. According to the government's social security website, it has been in the top 25 names since 1998.
7. Besides being the year our second son is born, it also saw Dale Earnhardt Sr. die in the final lap of the Daytona 500, Timothy McVeigh executed, and the summer deemed "The Summer of the Shark" as 8 year old Jesse Arbogast was only one of several highly-publicized shark attacks. What year was it?

Answer: 2001

It seems impossible now, but for months in 2001 the nation's biggest story was the one of California Rep. Gary Condit and his missing intern, Chandra Levy. But then 9/11 struck and the case was all but forgotten.
8. Our second son had a rather strange "love" as a teenager living in the 1990s. He liked something just because of one attribute, no matter what that something was. The Australian tree frog, chlorophyll, and Libya's former national flag all shared this attribute. What is it?

Answer: They are all green.

Green's complementary (opposite) color is magenta on the color spectrum. It is considered a "cool" color and is often associated with environmentalism such as green cars, green space. Dylan can see a new dish-set that is green and wants it just because it is green. There is one exception... green vegetables. Just because they are green, doesn't make them good!
The Libyan flag was all green until 2011 when it was changed.
9. His other love has also been a constant. Old latex balloons, or boonies as he refers to them, that have been blown up for at least a few days. We have boony beds, boony ships, etc. Thank goodness they are now made out of cheap latex. My older son tells me they were originally made out of dried animal bladders. Is he telling me the truth?

Answer: Yes

Yuck! But true. Prior to the 1800's, especially in the European regions, jesters and troubadours were said to sometimes inflate the entrails of recently butchered animals and "entertain" with them. The bladders, intestines, and sometimes the stomach, were strong enough that, despite their thinness, they could be manipulated into amusing shapes.

The modern rubber latex balloon were invented in the 1800s (thank goodness!).
10. While our middle son is the most persistent and patient when trying something new, the trait most often stated for him is his charm. He has his teacher, our sitter, and my friends all enamored with him. He is all of the following except for the antonym of engaging. Which word is that?

Answer: insipid

Per Webster, insipid is defined as lacking in qualities that interest, stimulate or challenge - dull or flat. With his little set of "girl" friends, Dylan is definitely not that! At the same time, he is also our little engineer and was writing his full name prior to preschool!
11. It is time for #3! Our daughter's name is shared with one of our president's surnames. This president started his political career as a Democrat but changed to a Republican prior to holding any major office. Growing up in Illinois, he stated the "small universe" of the Midwest was where he "learned standards that would guide me the rest of my life." Which president shares his last name with our daughter?

Answer: Ronald Reagan

Previously a Democrat who admired Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan became a conservative Republican in 1962.

Reagan Renee was named with an 'a' because we thought it would be easier for others to spell since it was Ronald Reagan's name. But others still spell it the more popular form of Regan.
12. Besides being the year our last child was born, it also saw Arnold Schwarzenegger sworn in as governor of California, SARS threatened world travelers, and President Bush prematurely announced victory in Iraq. Which year was it?

Answer: 2003

Other happenings in 2003: The space shuttle Columbia is destroyed re-entering Earth's atmosphere, Enron cases were working through the courts, Martha Stewart was indicted, and the D.C. sniper was found guilty. Time's pick for Person of the Year was the American soldier.
13. Our daughter is our first to truly have a favorite stuffed animal. It sleeps with her, goes to grandma's with her and is taken for walks instead of her doll. The animal is a mammal whose gestation period is 31 days. It is considered such a problematic pest in Australia that land owners are legally obliged to control them. What kind of animal is my daughter's stuffed animal?

Answer: rabbit

Frogs and birds are not mammals. Mice are mammals but their gestation is only 19-21 days. Fortunately Reagan's bunny doesn't destroy or procreate. It just has the unfortunate circumstance of being white so it's dirty most of its life.
14. Our daughter likes all of the following movies but her favorite has led to her nickname of Miss Mater. Which of the following movies has a character named Mater, voiced by Larry The Cable Guy?

Answer: Cars

You can tell Reagan has two big brothers. No princess movies here!

Scripted originally in 1998, "Cars" was benched in favor of "Toy Story 2". Also, Lightning McQueen's number was originally going to be 57 (director John Lasseter's birth year), but was changed to 95 (the year "Toy Story" was released).
15. Our daughter is our little social butterfly. She can talk your ear off if you accidentally say "hi" to her in a store. Shy is not in her repertoire. Therefore, which of the following is she not, ie. what is the antonym of social?

Answer: taciturn

Per Webster, taciturn is defined as a temperamental disinclination to talk. And Reagan certainly is not that! The other three choices are all related to outgoing, social personalities. I hope you enjoyed getting to know a little bit about my kids! I know I enjoyed creating it!
