Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which animal has a copper-based oxygen-carrying component in its blood called hemocyanin?

Answer: Octopus

Though the octopus is very strong, he gives out easily because the hemocyanin is much less efficient than hemoglobin for carrying oxygen. When the octopus struggles, he goes into oxygen deprivation very easily.
2. Mother's Day was created and founded by President Woodrow Wilson.

Answer: False

Julia Ward Lowe, an American poet who wrote "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", founded Mother's Day and called for June 2 to be "the day". President Wilson authorized the national holiday in 1915 and it was set in May.
3. The "pom pom girl" was a synonym for what?

Answer: Prostitute

The pom pom girl expression came from the "pom pom" automatic guns that were used by the Chicago gangsters and it worked its way into also meaning women who hung around the gangs and made what money they could in this way.
4. Who was responsible for adding Alaska to the United States?

Answer: William Seward

Seward purchased Alaska from Russia for $7 million in 1867. It was called "Seward's Folly". The name Alaska comes from the Aleut word A-la-as-ka meaning "the great country". Captain Vitus Bering, a Dane, who had been exploring in Russia is thought to be the first white man to visit Alaska. Alaska became the 49th American state in 1959.
5. Where was Tin Pan Alley?

Answer: New York City, New York

The original is located between 48th and 52nd Streets on Seventh Avenue in NYC. The term was first written in 1914 and it no doubt came from the tinny, out of tune pianos that were being played creating constant noise from that area. Now, it can mean anyplace where popular music is published.
6. What did the 102 people who founded the Plymouth Colony call themselves?

Answer: They had no name

Their descendants called them "Forefathers". The name "Pilgrim" was first used by William Bradford in 1630. He used the phrase, "they knew they were pilgrims" in his chronicle "Of Plimoth Plantation". The word "pilgrim" means a wanderer, a person who travels far to a sacred place. The word "pilgrim" came from the Latin "peregrinus" which means "a stranger".
7. From memory lane------"A few years ago", we'd race home from school to listen to the string of our favorite radio programs that included "Captain Midnight". What product always sponsored "Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy"?

Answer: Wheaties

"Wheaties----Breakfast of Champions". Even Tiger Woods eats his Wheaties. Wheaties loves the champions. There was a real Jack Armstrong. General Mills executive Sammy Gale roomed with Jack Armstrong in college and decided to use his name. Jack Armstrong went on to be a civil engineer, a decorated Army Air Force officer during WWII and even worked for the Apollo and Gemini space programs.

He died in 1985 at the age of 74----still a real champion.
8. In 1848, a great invasion of grasshoppers came to the Mormon settlers around the Great Salt Lake and threatened starvation. The Mormons did everything they could but to no avail. What came and took care of matters?

Answer: Seagulls

Great flocks of seagulls arrived and the crops were saved. There is a monument to the seagull on Temple Square in Salt Lake City where it is written, "In grateful remembrance of the mercy of God to the Mormon pioneers". You know, the Great Salt Lake is a LONG distance from where the seagulls usually hang out.

They showed up another time in 1947 and destroyed a plague of caterpillars in Scotland.
9. Where is "Gullah" spoken?

Answer: Sea Islands - Off Georgia in the US

Gullah is an American dialect with approximately 5000 African terms included. It is said that it takes its name from the Gola tribe in Africa.
10. This is a weird one---Who were the first people to say, "Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die."?

Answer: Egyptians

Told you it was weird! This was a traditional saying of the Egyptians who, at their banquets, exhibited a skeleton to the guests to remind them of the brevity of life. It also appears in Eccles 8:15, "A man hath no better thing under the sun than to eat, drink and be merry".
