Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Woodrow Wilson was the first Governor of New Jersey to serve as United States President.

Answer: True

Woodrow Wilson served a abbreviated term lasting just over two years. He left to become President of the United States after winning the Election of 1912. During that election process, Wilson received the Democratic nomination but not until the 46th ballot. Prior to his political career, he served as President of Princeton University.
2. New Jersey is the smallest state in the United States.

Answer: False

NJ is small but it's only the fourth smallest. Only Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island are smaller. New Jersey does have the nation's highest population density, at about 1,200 people per square mile. Alaska has the smallest population density of 1.3 people per square mile.
3. The first college football game was played in NJ and included two NJ colleges, Rutgers College and the College of New Jersey.

Answer: True

Rutgers University (called Rutgers College at that time) and its neighbor, Princeton University (called the College of New Jersey at that time), played the first game of intercollegiate football on Nov. 6, 1869, on the Rutgers campus in New Brunswick, N.J. It was played with a spherical ball and used different rules. Rutgers won that first game, 6-4.

Hoboken, NJ is also believed to be the site of the first organized baseball game.
4. Following Nevada, New Jersey was the second U.S. state that approved casino gambling in the U.S.

Answer: True

In 1976, New Jersey voters approved a referendum which legalized casinos, but restricted them to Atlantic City. At that time, Nevada was the only state with legal casino gambling. Nevada previously legalized gambling in 1931.
5. The first US thoroughbred race track was built in NJ.

Answer: False

In 1665, the first thoroughbred racetrack was constructed on Long Island, NY and was named the Newmarket Course. Long Branch Racetrack (to be known later as Monmouth Park) opened in 1870, it was the first grand racing venue in NJ.
6. The first manned flight was done in a hot air balloon in NJ.

Answer: False

John Pierre Blanchard first flew a hot air balloon in Paris, back in 1784. Once again, it was Blanchard who made the first US flight on January 9, 1793. He took off in his balloon from Philadelphia, PA, moved easterly over over the Delaware River and into NJ. He landed the balloon in Deptford, NJ.
7. Salt Water Taffy was first commercially made and sold in New Jersey.

Answer: True

The wife of a man named John Stearns created a taffy made with salt water in October 1872 in Santa Barbara, CA. It was made for her husband's employees. Joseph Fralinger developed and sold the candy in Atlantic City, NJ. He refined a recipe for taffy but wanted to make it less sticky and easier to unwrap.

It's now available throughout the US and Eastern Canada. Contrary to its name, Fralinger's candy does not contain salt water.
8. New Jersey is an island.

Answer: False

Actually, New Jersey is a peninsula; bordered on three sides by water. The Delaware River separates NJ from Pennsylvania. The Atlantic Ocean is its border from where it meets the Delaware all the way up the coastline, past New York City. There is a connecting border along the northern border with New York state.
9. The first commercial brewery in the United States was in Hoboken, NJ.

Answer: False

Although this has been stated as true, it was not the first in the US. New Jersey's first commercial brewery was preceded by a brewery opened in New Amsterdam (Manhattan) almost 30 years earlier. New Jersey's first brewery did open in Hoboken in 1641.
10. New Jersey is the birthplace of the first drive-in movie theater.

Answer: True

In 1933, Richard Hollingshead opened the first theater in Camden, N.J. People paid 25 cents per car as well as per person, up to $1.00 total price. The first movie shown was a British comedy 'Wives Beware'. He may have gotten his inspiration from his rather 'large' mother who was uncomfortable sitting in the seats of a regular movie theater.
