Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This mammal, which has become the personification of laziness, comes in two varities: Bradypus and Choloepus.

Answer: sloth

The furry arboreal mammal called the sloth is the epitome of laziness. There are five living species of this lazy critter, all of which live in South or Central America. The three-toed sloth, bradypus, is about the size of a house cat, while the larger two-toed variety, choloepus, is a little larger. Sloths sleep anywhere from 15 to 18 hours per day, hanging upside-down.

By the way, the prefix "bradys" is Greek for "slow".
2. If you suffer from amblyopia, which part of your body is lazy?

Answer: eye

Amblyopia, commonly known as "lazy eye", is a condition caused by not wearing proper eye correction such as glasses or contact lenses. The brain does not properly recognize images produced by the "lazy" eye, resulting in an inability to see from said eye. It is estimated that three percent of children under six have some form of amblyopia.
3. Where in your house would you be most likely to find a lazy Susan?

Answer: the kitchen

A lazy Susan is the name for a type of serving device, usually placed on a tabletop, that rotates. Usually made of wood, they hold such things as condiments and dips. I don't know why it's called Susan - maybe its inventor, Thomas Jefferson, knew someone named Susan who was lazy.
4. Surely you've heard that song "Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer". But do you know which singer brought it to the top 10 in the US in 1963?

Answer: Nat King Cole

I don't know how something can be lazy and crazy at the same time, but it rhymes. This long-titled ode to summer peaked at number 6 on the Billboard chart in 1963. Some summer things mentioned in the song are pretzels, beer, soda, sandwiches, and weenies.
5. Anyone who has a cat knows that they are notoriously lazy. Which of these is NOT true about our feline friends and sleeping?

Answer: Cats have less REM sleep than humans

Kitties actually have more REM sleep - about 60 percent, or three times more - than humans. Crepuscular means most active at dawn and dusk, the time when "puddy prey", such as mice, are most active. Did you know that about 60 percent of cat owners let their furry friends sleep in their bed? In case you're wondering, I'm among them... both of my dogs sleep with me, too.
6. Which of these words is NOT a synonym for a lazy, good for nothing person?

Answer: shirk

Shirk is actually a verb; it means to avoid work. "Gus the lazy wastrel shirked work by staying in bed all day". I like "slugabed".
7. What would a lazy quiz be without a question on every lazy person's favorite place - bed? When did people begin to use cotton mattresses instead of straw?

Answer: late 1700s

Prior to the advent of cotton mattresses, people slept on beds stuffed with straw or down. One of the downsides of this was that this invited bed buddies, literally. Vermin such as rats and bugs were attracted to the mattresses of even the rich and royal. The first coil spring for use in mattresses was patented in 1865.
8. What quintessential device for the lazy person was invented by Eugene Polley in 1955?

Answer: wireless TV remote control

Back when you only got three or four channels on your TV, only rich people or really lazy ones had remote controls (I came from a blue collar environment, so I had to suffer the inconvenience of walking across the living room when I wanted to change the channel). Today, with hundreds of channels, they're a necessity. Eugene Polley, an engineer for Zenith, invented the first wireless remote control in 1955.

The first remote control, which was connected to the television set by a wire, debuted in 1950.

It was called, fittingly enough, "Lazy Bones".
9. Lazy people in history: This king loved his bed so much that he rarely left it. He would often hold court sitting in his bed. He reportedly owned 413 of them.

Answer: Louis XIV

Louis XIV of France, of "l'etat c'est moi" fame, apparently enjoyed his boudoir. It is said that he liked his beds big and ostentatious; or fit for a king.
10. What company that caters to us lazy people was started in Monroe, Michigan in 1929 by cousins Edward Knabusch and Edwin Shoemaker?

Answer: La-Z-Boy

The company put out its first upholstered recliner in 1929, and it was an instant hit. Today there are La-Z-Boy stores all over the world, where you can buy recliners, chairs, and sofas in just about every shape and size.
