Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This bridge is painted in international orange but that isn't part of its name or the state it's in. What is the bridge's name?

Answer: Golden Gate Bridge

This is the Golden Gate Bridge spanning the Golden Gate Strait in the Golden State of California. It opened in 1937 after 4 years of construction. It is painted in a version of international orange so it is more readily visible to ships; it also fits well with the surrounding natural colors. Do you have something you might like to paint in this particular color? Go to your local paint store and give them this formula for CMYK colors: C= Cyan: 0%, M =Magenta: 69%, Y =Yellow: 100%, K = Black: 6%.
2. What's this orange-colored treat doing lying on the picnic table? Pick it up and tell me what it is.

Answer: Creamsicle

The origins of the Creamsicle have been lost to time. The vanilla ice cream bars coated with frozen orange juice were originally produced by the Popsicle Company, although their origins may come from a soda fountain treat known as the orange freeze. The Popsicle Co. and its creations have been sold several times and are now a subsidiary of the Unilever Company. Regardless, Creamsicles are a great Summer treat. And summer is about nine months long where I live!
3. Here's a cheery fellow and a welcome sight after winter, whether or not it's baseball season. What is this bird's name?

Answer: Baltimore oriole

Similar in looks to the Old World Oriole, though a distinct species, the Baltimore Oriole is a bird of eastern and northern North America, wintering in southern Florida and Central America. It was named after the coat of arms of Lord Baltimore, who was the first propriety governor of the Maryland colony.

It is the state bird of Maryland and inspired the name for the Baltimore Orioles baseball team.
4. What kind of flowers are these?

Answer: marigolds

Not all marigolds are orange but these are! The genus Tagetes is native to North and South America but marigolds have been planted around the world. They don't need much care and are a reliable bloomer whether single- or double-flowered. Organic gardeners have found that some species (mostly single-flowered) are effective in discouraging soil nematodes around melon and cucumber plants. And they look nice in the vegetable garden, too.
5. Which John Prine album might this picture remind you of?

Answer: Bruised Orange

This is an orange quiz so "Bruised Orange" it is. Released in 1978 the album contains some of Prine's best-known songs including "Bruised Orange (Chain of Sorrow)", "Fish and Whistle" and "That's the Way That the World Goes 'Round".
6. Many U.S. states have a town or county named Orange. Can you decipher the state famous for covered bridges, maple syrup and autumn foliage I'm thinking of from this picture?

Answer: Vermont

The town of Orange is located in the county of Orange in Vermont (as is the covered bridge in the picture). Established in 1781, Orange County is located in east-central Vermont and is a prime area for fall foliage photography. There are actually covered bridges in the other three states listed but they are not known for their maple syrup production.
7. Now that's one way to catch a spider! What is that stuff that surrounds it?

Answer: amber

Amber is fossilized tree resin. It is used in folk medicine, perfumes and jewelry. Insects and arachnids sometimes seen in amber are called inclusions. Amber can be found worldwide and has been of interest to mankind for two and a half millennia.
8. Originating in Asia this flower is cultivated worldwide. By what name do we know this orange Asian plant?

Answer: tiger lily

Tigers once had a wide range across Asia and the tiger lily does now. It has been naturalized to parts of North America; so much so that it can even be found in roadside ditches. The blooms are short-lived but replenish readily.
9. The insect in this photograph is an Anthocharis cardamines. That's great but what do Europeans usually call it?

Answer: Orange tip butterfly

This is an orange quiz so Orange Tip butterfly it is. The male of the species has orange tips on his wings; the females are mostly white. The male can hide the orange by tucking in his wings. They are found across Europe and Asia to Japan and have been found in increasing numbers in Great Britain over the last three decades; botanists attribute that to warmer temperatures.
10. Hey, it's Nemo! Well, maybe not but it is the same kind of fish. Which is it?

Answer: clownfish

There are two types of fish known as the clownfish but the clown anemonefish (Amphiprion percula) is the true one. They have a symbiotic relationship with anemones, which normally eat fish. The clowns have a layer of mucus which can protect them from the anemone's stings.

They do a little dance with the anemones - like a cross between the Bump and the Electric Slide from what I can gather, to kind of get to know them, I guess - and then live in among the anemone's tentacles, cleaning the anemone of parasites in exchange for being protected from bigger fish.
