Under the reign of Queen Elizabeth, the Sumptuary Laws determined which colors people could wear. Color in clothing was extremely important and would identify a person's class, wealth, and rank in society. Orange was a color that was worn by upper and lower classes. The scrub uniforms made it easier for prisoners to work and the orange color was considered less of a badge of shame. Catholicism, however, regards orange as a color of endurance and strength.
