Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ronnie Hilton released a fun song about mice in 1965. The mouse family lived in a windmill, but where precisely was it?

Answer: Old Amsterdam

A favourite with kids of all ages, it was his last foray into the British music charts.
The final chorus goes like this-
"A mouse lived in a windmill, so snug and so nice
There's nobody there now but a whole lot of mice."

They just do not write lyrics like that any more...
2. What animal is used to describe a court hearing where the rules of law are adhered to very loosely, or not at all?

Answer: kangaroo

Surprisingly, this term is not Australian in origin. It seems to have originated in Texas in the 1850's. Several theories are out there, but my favourite suggests that a person being lynched jumped around on the end of a rope, like a kangaroo.
3. When appropriately-named British diver Peter Waterfield won the 10 metre Gold medal at the 2002 Commonwealth games, what dive was he the first to perform in International competition?

Answer: Back 2 1/2 somersault with 2 1/2 twists

His beautifully performed dive sealed the top step on the podium for England, with Leon Taylor (England) and Canadian Alexandre Despatie rounding out the medals. All three were separated by only 0.51 points at the finale.
4. How many legal two-letter words are there in the 'Official Scrabble Players Dictionary Version 4' (issued March 2006)?

Answer: 101

Only two letters cannot be used in combination to make a two-letter word. These are C and V. Who would have guessed that HM (an expression of surprise) and XU (a Vietnamese coin) could be such useful words?
5. What search engine was (supposedly) created by a twelve-year old Himalayan mountain goat named Daphne?

Answer: IXQuick.com

On their website, they give the top ten reasons why they are the best, with the disclaimer that one of the reasons may not be completely true. I wonder which one?
6. In 1893, a group of Australians established a colony called New Australia. What country did they then call home?

Answer: Paraguay

William Lane attempted to do the impossible- set up a totally independent, working Communist state. His catchcry was "from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs". Needless to say, the experiment failed after a few years, and his followers drifted back to Australia or integrated themselves into Paraguayan life-style.
7. "There is a little of him in all of us" is a quote from which movie?

Answer: Crocodile Dundee

Spoken by the late John Mellion's character, Wally, about Paul Hogan's title character. Dundee survived in the harshest conditions in the world, the Australian Top End, now all he has to do is survive New York.
8. How many degrees does the Earth rotate in one hour?

Answer: 15

The earth takes twenty four hours (give or take a second or two) to complete a full rotation. There are 360 degrees in a circle. 360 divided by 24 equals 15.
9. Which of these cities is the most southerly national capital?

Answer: London, England

Congratulations if you saw the trick in this question. The capital of Australia is Canberra, New Zealand's capital is Wellington and South Africa has three capitals- Bloemfontein, Cape Town and Pretoria.
10. What does the letter "F" represent on a ship's Plimsoll line?

Answer: Fresh water

The Plimsoll line was introduced in 1870 to set the standards for legal weights of cargo in ships. Many variables about the ship are taken into account, including the buoyancy, size, number of compartments and the type of water sailed through. Other letters on the loadline are TF- Tropical Fresh, T- Tropical, S and W for Summer and Winter and WNA- Winter North Atlantic.
