Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hyderabad was a large princely state in the heart of the Indian sub-continent. It ceased to exist in 1948 when India became independent of British rule. What title did the rulers of Hyderabad have?

Answer: Nizam

Nizams ruled the powerful region of Hyderabad from 1671 until 1948, when India was created from the union of the many states and cities that existed during British rule. A negus is Ethiopian and a shogun is a Japanese military general. Caliphs rule in Middle East Muslim countries.
2. 'Feeling Groovy' is the subtitle of a nice, happy song by Simon and Garfunkel. What is the first part of the title?

Answer: The 59th Street Bridge Song

'The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)' is a simple song about Paul Simon crossing the Queensboro Bridge in New York. It came from the 1966 album 'Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme' but did not chart as a single.

The opening line is 'Slow down, you move too fast. You got to make the morning last', which I think is great advice!
3. If you add the scores of the four cardinal points (north, south, east and west) on a standard dart board, what is the result?

Answer: 40

N=20, S=3, E= 6, W=11.

The highest possible score with a single dart is triple 20 (60), and the highest in a single turn of three darts is 180, which is three triple 20s.
4. 'RoboCop' is a movie from 1987, remade in 2014. Which US city is the setting for the futuristic cyborg cop movie?

Answer: Detroit

The original starred Peter Weller as Alex P Murphy, a cop who was murdered and rebuilt as RoboCop. Joel Kinnaman reprised the role in 2014. There were various other franchises, including two sequels to the original movie, a couple of animated shows and a television series.
5. What are the two northernmost capital cities in Africa? There is only 0.1 degrees difference between them.

Answer: Tunis and Algiers

Tunis (Tunisia) is at 36.8N and Algiers (Algeria) 36.7N, which is only about 11 kilometres difference.

Rabat (Morocco) is the next most northerly, followed by Tripoli (Libya) and Cairo (Egypt).

Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and Khartoum (Sudan) are both a long way south and Windhoek (Namibia) is at the opposite end of Africa.
6. I have a box measuring one metre by one metre by one metre. What is the approximate length of the longest piece of stick that would fit in the box?

Answer: 1.73205 metres (Square root of 3)

To calculate the long diagonal, we have to use the Pythagoras's Theorem twice. The first calculation is on one of the faces, and is 1^2 +1^2 = SQRT 2 for the long side of the first triangle. Using that result in the second calculation gives is 1^2 (length of the edge) + SQRT 2^2 (length of the diagonal of the face) = 1+2 = SQRT 3 (length of the longest diagonal).
7. If someone gave you a deely bopper, what would you do with it?

Answer: Wear it on your head

A deely bobber looks like a headband with a couple of wobbly antennae attached. They can sometimes be found on brides-to-be at hen's parties, or alcoholically-propelled sports fans, and should never be taken seriously!
8. Pregnant women sometimes have craving for unusual foods and other substances. What is the medical terminology for these cravings?

Answer: Pica

Pickles and ice cream, dirt, ice, toothpaste, chalk, peanut butter pizzas are some of the items that get eaten. The reasons for the cravings is unclear, but seems to relate to a possible deficiency in certain substances caused by the pregnancy. Pregorexia is a media term mixing 'pregnancy' and 'anorexia' and refers to women who try to lose weight during pregnancy by starving vomiting. Binge Eating Disorder sufferers tend to eat, whether they are hungry or not. Psittacosis is a disease transmitted by parrots, and is not related to pregnancy.

The word 'pica' is the Latin word for magpie, and implies that the woman will eating almost anything, just like the bird.
9. What is the proper name for the eyeglasses that have a handle on the side, instead of arms that hook over your ears? Think of the upper-class at the opera in the 19th century.

Answer: Lorgnette

Pince-nez do not have arms, either, but are help in place by pressure on the nose- ('pince-nez' means 'pinch the nose' in French). A loupe is a small magnifying glass, usually used by jewellers and stamp and coin collectors. Anaglyph are the 3-D glasses where each lens is a different colour.
10. In the nursery rhyme 'Sing a Song of Sixpence', what is the queen doing?

Answer: Eating bread and honey

Like many nursery rhymes, 'Sing a Song of Sixpence' has historical roots, and as usual these roots are disputed. One theory is that the King is Henry VIII, the Queen is Catherine of Aragon, and Anne Boleyn is the maid who was hanging out the clothes.

'Little Boy Blue' was asleep under the haystack, but that's another story!
