Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. American R & B band, Ray Parker Jr. and Raydio, released a song in 1978 with the title of a nursery rhyme. What was this disco hit called?

Answer: Jack and Jill

'Jack and Jill' was a Top 10 on many charts, and a favourite in the discos that I used to frequent, way back when.

Ray Parker later split from the band, and in 1984 had a huge hit with the theme from 'Ghostbusters'.
2. Lanolin is a waxlike substances with a variety of applications. It is used in make-up, lip balms, lubricants, waterproofing and even for leather polish. What is the source of lanolin?

Answer: It comes from sheep

Lanolin is extracted from the wool of sheep- it is the substance that stops the animal from shrinking when it rains!

It has been used as a lubricant in gun barrels, and waterproofing of ship's propellers to repel barnacles and seaweed. Useful stuff, indeed!
3. What professional would be the most interested in horsts and grabens?

Answer: Geologist

Horsts and grabens are associated with fault lines in the earth's crust. When a block of earth is forced upwards, it is a horst, and when pushed downwards, it is a graben. Both words are German, horst meaning 'heap' and graben meaning 'ditch'.
4. Leslie Nielsen was the star of the 'Naked Gun' series of movies, where he played Detective Frank Drebin. These movies were based on an earlier TV series, also starring Nielsen. What was the name of that series?

Answer: Police Squad

Jerry Zucker, David Zucker and Jim Abrahams produced and wrote the 1982 series, which is loaded with sight gags, satirical parodies and ludicrously overacting characters. Unfortunately, the series only lasted for six episodes. Alan North was Nielsen's co-star in this very funny show.

'Reno 911!' is a much more recent parody, running from 2003-2009. 'Dragnet' was one of the earlier cop shows, and 'Cop Shop' was an Australian television series that ran from 1977-83.
5. Under Islamic religious laws, what is the maximum number of wives that a Muslim man can have?

Answer: 4

The regulations regarding polygyny are set out in the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam.

By way of explanation, 'Islam' is the faith, and a 'Muslim' practices Islam.
6. Sir John Harrington was a member of the court of Queen Elizabeth I, and in 1596 , he published the book, 'A New Discourse upon a Stale Subject: The Metamorphosis of Ajax'. What was the topic of the book?

Answer: Flushing toilets

Harrington is credited with being the inventor of a flushing toilet, but it did not really catch on until the 1770s. His name lives on, however, as the term 'john' for a toilet.
7. Where in the human body would you find a cuspid?

Answer: Mouth

A cuspid is a tooth, located next to the front (incisor) teeth. The average human has four of them, two upstairs and two down.
8. The corpse flower, Titan arum, is a huge flower, in fact it is the largest in the world. It gives off a smell like rotten meat, to attract the insects that pollinate it. Which country does it come from?

Answer: Indonesia

To be even more precise, it is only found on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The smell has been described as a mixture of limburger cheese, sweaty socks and rotten fish, and the flower can grow to 3 metres tall, and 3 metres across!
9. What phrase, relating to law enforcement and policing, was allegedly coined by FBI agent, Robert Ressler, in the 1970s?

Answer: 'Serial killer'

Book 'em, Danno!" was a common catchphrase in the cop show, 'Hawaii Five-O' and 'Terminate with extreme prejudice' has a military origin. 'Habeas corpus' is Latin and means that a defendant must be produced in court.

Ressler was employed by the FBI, working in a section that specialised in profiling of violent offenders.
10. If canine relates to dogs, and feline relates to cats, what animal does 'caprine' relate to?

Answer: Goats

Foxes are vulpine, and pavonine relates to peacocks. Ducks are anatine. The author of this quiz is caprine- I was born in late December and my sign is Capricorn!
