Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I have a wooden box that is a one-metre cube. What is the longest piece of straight stick that I could put in it?

Answer: Square root of 3 metres

Pythagoras should be able to help with this problem. The 'a^2 + b^2 = c^2' thingy.

The first step is to determine the length of the diagonal of one face of the cube. 1^2 + 1^2 gives a result of Sqrt of 2.

Using this result in step 2 is:- Sqrt 2^2 + 1^2 = 3, giving the answer as sqrt 3, or approximately 1.73 metres.
2. When asked what he would do to avoid being hit by lightning on the course, which golfer was quoted as saying, 'Hold up a 1-iron. Not even God can hit a 1-iron.'?

Answer: Lee Trevino

In 1975, Supermex, as he was known, gave this reply to a reporter when asked what he would do if he was again caught in a storm whilst on course. He had been zapped the week before and suffered a back injury from it.

Hagen is probably best remembered for advising people to 'stop and smell the roses'.
3. Which of these is an Australian cockatoo?

Answer: Major Mitchell

Named after an early Australian explorer, it has a pink body, white wings and a rather impressive red and yellow crest.

Lieutenant Dan was a character in 'Forrest Gump', General Pants is an Australian clothing company and Colonel Cathcart featured in 'Catch-22', the anti-war satire written by Joseph Heller, and one of my favourite books.
4. What is a Taoiseach?

Answer: A political leader in Ireland

The Taoiseach is the equivalent of the Prime Minister in other countries, and is appointed by the Irish President.
5. The Straits Settlements was a British colony established in 1826. Which strait did they take their name from?

Answer: Strait of Malacca

Penang, Malacca, Dinding and Singapore were the main settlements involved. They were spread along the west coast of present-day Malaysia, except Singapore, which is an island off the south coast. In 1946, the Settlements became part of British-controlled Malaya. In 1963, Malaya became Malaysia, declaring independence from Britain.

Bering Strait is between Alaska and Siberia, Messina separates Sicily from the Italian mainland and Cook Strait runs between the North and South Islands of New Zealand.
6. Australia has six state capitals. Which capital city is the only one that is situated on a river of the same name?

Answer: Brisbane

The Brisbane River flows generally in a north-easterly direction, before emptying into Moreton Bay.

Adelaide is on the Torrens River, Perth lies on the Swan River and Melbourne has the Yarra River. Of the remaining two capitals, Sydney was built on Port Jackson, which is the headwaters of the Parramatta River, and Hobart is divided by the Derwent River.
7. Blake Edwards was known for producing the 'Pink Panther' series of movies. He was married to Patricia Walker from 1953 till they divorced in 1967. What famous actress became his second wife in 1969?

Answer: Julie Andrews

I wonder if being married to Mary Poppins meant that he did not have to pick up his toys? Edwards also directed classics such as 'Breakfast at Tiffanys', 'Days of Wine and Roses', '10' starring Bo Derek, 'Victor Victoria' and the TV series, 'Peter Gunn'. Blake Edwards died in 2010, aged 88.
8. If you have astigmatism, who would you see for help?

Answer: Optometrist

Astigmatism is one of the more common eyesight problems, with around one in four people being affected. The eyeball is a bit out of shape, meaning that the lens cannot focus correctly on the retina. Some symptoms include blurred vision, headaches and difficulty with middle distance reading.
I was diagnosed in primary school, and have had to wear corrective glasses ever since.
9. The game of mahjong was developed in China, over 2000 years ago. What is the meaning of the word 'mahjong'?

Answer: Sparrow

There are many variations of the game, but there is a similarity to the card game of rummy. The object is to collect sets (or melds) of various suits. Runs or three tiles in a row also count, as do 'eyes', a pair of identical tiles. The origins of both the name and the origin are lost in the mists of time, but the legendary Confucius appears to have liked sparrows.
10. Michael J. Fox starred as the Deputy Mayor in 'Spin City', a sitcom that ran in the late 1990s. Which city was the show set in?

Answer: New York

Fox starred as Mike Flaherty, until he was replaced by Charlie Sheen. He had been diagnosed as contracting Parkinson's disease.
Did you know that Barry Bostwick, who played the Mayor, also played Brad in 'Rocky Horror Picture Show'?
