Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The highest possible score in one turn in a game of darts is 180, but what is the highest possible peg-out score, finishing with a double?

Answer: 170

The only way to score 170 is triple 20-triple 20-bullseye (50). Scoring 174 would be triple 20-triple 20- triple 18, but the rules of darts state that you must finish with a Double. Pegging out from 160 can be done a couple of ways, triple 20-triple 20-double 20 being the easiest.

Scoring 178 with three darts is impossible.
2. In Roman numerals, what value would be represented by one of each symbol, in descending order, i.e. MDCLXVI? (Hopefully my picture of London will help!).

Answer: 1666

The year 1666 was when the Great Fire of London occurred, which destroyed much of the inner city. Amazingly, deaths were very low, with only about eight people dying. The picture is titled 'London, as it appeared from Bankside, Southwark, During the Great Fire.'

The other dates are relevant in London's history. 1066 was the Battle of Hastings, 1215 was the signing of the Magna Carta by King John, and 1948 was when the city hosted the Olympics for the second time.
3. What was the 1970s sitcom starring Lloyd Haynes, Denise Nicholas, Michael Constantine and Karen Valentine? It was set in a history class in a high school.

Answer: Room 222

'Room 222' was a comedy with a gentle message of being nice to each other.

'Hawaii 5-0' was a cop show set in Hawaii (strangely enough!), with the well known tagline 'Book 'em, Danno' being uttered almost every episode. 'Blake's 7 ' was a sci-fi drama, released by the BBC in 1978. 'Numb3rs' was another cop show, with a twist- the star was an expert mathematician, who used numbers and incredibly complex equations to solve crimes.
4. The premier car race in Australia has been run every year since 1963. When it first started it was located on Phillip Island in Victoria, but moved to which New South Wales provincial city, where it was known as the Hardie-Ferodo 500 for many years?

Answer: Bathurst

It was originally known as the Bathurst 500 (500 miles), but has changed its name many times because of sponsorship deals. Armstrong 500, Gallagher 500, Hardie-Ferodo 500 were some of the titles, and when metrics were introduced in 1973, it became the Hardie-Ferodo 1000 (1000 kilometres, approximately 600 miles).

The official name of the circuit is 'Mount Panorama'.
5. If you were in London and needed to contact the Fire Brigade, what emergency number would you call?

Answer: 999

999 was the first ever dedicated emergency number, being introduced in 1937.

123 is the number to call in Colombia, and 117 is used in many African countries. 911 is not just used in the USA- Canada, much of South America, and various countries around the globe use it, too.
6. Which aircraft is generally considered as being at the forefront of the jet-age of mass transport? In one form or another, it was in service from 1958 to 1979.

Answer: Boeing 707

More than a thousand of these planes were built and many of the world's major airlines used them. They had four wing-mounted engines and a range of almost 10,000 kms.

The Lockheed C-141 Starlifter was a military plane, mainly used for cargo, but convertible to carry troops. The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was a single-engine fighter plane used by German Luftwaffe in WWII.

PT-109 was an American torpedo boat, skippered by future US president John F. Kennedy in WWII.
7. Between 1999 and 2015, which Californian band had hits with 'What's My Age Again?',' All the Small Things', 'Feeling This' and 'After Midnight'?

Answer: Blink 182

176biz was a Japanese band who existed from 2006 to 2009. Zuco 103 is a Dutch band who sings traditional Brazilian music in English and Portuguese. And 1927 are from Australia, where they hit the charts a couple of times.
8. The '419 Scam', or 'Nigerian Scam', is a fraud requiring advance fees to be paid in return for a huge sum of money. What is the relevance of the number '419'?

Answer: An article in the Nigerian legal system

This scam has been around for decades, in various forms. Please do NOT fall for it!

A Nigerian company, rich family, or government official allegedly has millions of dollars to smuggle out of the country and needs YOUR help. All you have to do is pay a fee for 'transfer expenses', 'bribe money' or a myriad of equally implausible charges, and the money is yours! A variation is 'You have won the lottery', and you did not even buy a ticket; lotteries do NOT work that way.

Another warning- you will never see ANY return on your outlay. Delete the email immediately.
9. In which game is a score of 111 known as a Nelson?

Answer: cricket

As with many superstitions, the origins are a bit blurry, but it is named after Lord Nelson, the hero of the Battle of Trafalgar (1805), who lost one eye, one arm, and one 'something else'.

Batsmen on a score of 111 (or any multiple of 111), always seem to be a bit more prudent with their shot-making.
10. The Dewey Decimal Classification is a system used to categorise books. It was devised in 1876 by American librarian, Melvil Dewey. It uses a hierarchical system to create classes and sub-classes of books, grouped by subject matter. If I wanted to find out about fossils, which part of the Dewey system would I start at?

Answer: 560

There are ten main classes that are divided into ten divisions, which are further broken into sections. Each section can be divided further, with further numbers being added to the right side. For instance, 561.19598 will take you to 'Fossil Plants of Indonesia'.

860 relates to Literature: Spanish. 994 is History: Other Areas: Australia.
798 is Arts and Recreation: Sports: Equestrian.
