Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It's Thanksgiving, the family has gathered and you've had the traditional turkey and stuffing, cranberries and pumpkin pie. A wonderful time was had by all. Now it's Friday, and time to shop for Christmas! What term is commonly used in the US to describe the first shopping day after Thanksgiving?

Answer: Black Friday

It might well be called Crazy Friday, with all-night waits in parking lots, stores opening at 3 or 4:00 AM, and frenzied crowds battling for bargains once stores open. A newer tradition is Black Monday or Cyber Monday, the first Monday after Thanksgiving, when people can shop for bargains online.
2. "Man Friday" is sometimes used to refer to a loyal worker or efficient employee. The term is taken from the name of a character in a classic novel first published in the 1700s. From which novel is the term taken?

Answer: Robinson Crusoe

"Robinson Crusoe", written by Daniel Defoe, was published in 1719 and tells the story of a man who lives alone for many years on a desert island. He finally comes upon a native whom he rescues from cannibals and takes as his employee. He names the native man Friday, because Crusoe finds him on that day. The term "Man Friday" is still in use, though perhaps not as much as in the past.
3. The English rock band The Cure released "Wish" in 1992. The hit album included one of their most popular songs, which contained the following lyrics: "I don't care if Monday's blue Tuesday's gray and Wednesday too Thursday I don't care about you It's..." Finish the verse. It's the song's title as well.

Answer: Friday I'm in Love

The Cure came on the music scene in the U.K. in 1979 with their first album "Three Imaginary Boys". Despite many personnel changes among band members, they have remained one of the most popular and commercially successful alternative bands around. "Friday I'm in Love" is one of their best-loved songs.
4. "Just the facts, ma'am." For those of you who can remember back that far, who was the tough but compassionate LAPD sergeant on the classic TV series "Dragnet"?

Answer: Joe Friday

"Dragnet" began on the radio in 1949, with Jack Webb playing Joe Friday and Barton Yarborough as his partner Sergeant Ben Romero. Jack Webb was also the creator and producer of the show. "Dragnet" moved to television in 1951 and was certainly the most popular police drama in history up to that time, the grandfather of later cop shows.

The series gave the audience a true picture of what real police work was like. The four-note musical introduction (remember it?) is as famous as the show itself, as are the opening words: "The story you are about to see is true. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent." Joe Friday had several partners, notably Ben Alexander as Frank Smith and Harry Morgan as Bill Gannon.

There have been several film and television versions of "Dragnet" since the original program appeared.
5. In 1940, Howard Hawks produced and directed this screwball comedy about the newspaper business, which was adapted from the 1928 Broadway play "The Front Page". The movie is considered a classic, with its snappy dialogue and stellar performances by Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. Name the film.

Answer: His Girl Friday

"The Front Page" was written by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur. A change in the film version was in the role of Hildy Johnson, who was originally written as a male and was changed to female for the movie. Howard Hawks cast Cary Grant as the leading man. Katharine Hepburn, Claudette Colbert and Ginger Rogers were all offered the part of Hildy, but they all turned it down. Hawks finally hired Rosalind Russell, who was perfect.

The film has been chosen for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.
6. Good Friday commemorates a most significant event in the Christian religion. On which day of the year does Good Friday fall?

Answer: Friday before Easter

The holiday falls on the Friday before Easter Sunday. Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Golgotha. It is observed primarily by those of the Christian faith and is a day of fasting in the Catholic religion. It is believed that the crucifixion of Jesus took place on a Friday, in the year 33 AD. The reason for the name "Good Friday" is uncertain, although it possibly comes from "God's Friday". Solemn rituals commemorating the death of Jesus vary widely from country to country.
7. Many people consider Friday the 13th to be very unlucky, and will take extra precautions on that date lest some ill-fortune might befall them. The medical term for the fear of Friday the 13th is paraskevidekatriaphobia.

Answer: True

The fear of Friday the 13th is indeed called paraskevidekatriaphobia, which is taken from the Greek words Paraskeví (Friday), and dekatreís (thirteen) together with phobia (fear). The word triskaidekaphobia indicates a fear of the number 13. Many people in the U.S. are afflicted with fear of Friday the 13th, with some even going so far as to avoid taking airplane flights, going to work, or even leaving the house on that day.

Where did this fear originate? There are many theories. Some believe that it is a combination of fear of the number 13, and the belief that Friday is unlucky. Friday may also be considered an unlucky day as Jesus was crucified on a Friday, according to Christian tradition.
8. The film "Friday the 13th" was a huge success, with many sequels to follow. Who was the villain of this gory horror film series?

Answer: Jason Voorhees

Jason was a revenge-bent killer corpse in a goalie mask, preying on Camp Crystal Lake vacationers. Although he "dies" several times, he keeps coming back for another sequel, frightening decades of young movie-goers.
9. In many languages, Friday is named for a particular planet. For example, Friday is vendredi in French, venerdě in Italian and viernes in Spanish. (The days of the week aren't capitalized in these Romance languages). So, which planet is it?

Answer: Venus

In some Romance languages, the word for Friday is derived from the Latin "dies Veneris" (day of Venus). In several Indian languages, Friday is named for Shukra, a Sanskrit name for Venus. The English word Friday is also derived from the name of the goddess of love and beauty.
10. "Friday Night Lights" is one of the best television series of the past decade. The show tells the story of a highly-principled football coach, his family, and the players on his high school varsity team. It has received high praise from critics and won several awards. In which football-mad state does this terrific show take place?

Answer: Texas

Dillon, Texas is the fictional location of the series, and the Dillon Panthers are the high school team coached by Eric Taylor. Taylor's wife Tami is the school principal. The series deals with issues in the Taylors' family life, as well as the many problems of the young players on Coach Taylor's team. "Friday Night Lights" is beautifully written and acted, authentic and intelligent. Don't miss it!
