Joe Friday was the main character in several incarnations of "Dragnet", including a radio series (1949-1957) and two television series (1951-1959 and 1967-1970) where he was portrayed by Jack Webb (1920-1982) as well as a 1987 movie starring Dan Aykroyd and other television series.

While the Jack Webb portrayal of the character never actually said "Just the Facts, Ma'am", the public associates the phrase with the character of the police detective who often conducted his business in an stoic, even-keeled manner.

The series as a whole was noted for a sense of realism.

Billy Sunday (1862-1935) was a popular US evangelist in the first third of the 20th century. His sermons would sometimes include references to the game of baseball. In a eight-season career (1883-1890), he played for the Chicago White Stockings (now Cubs), Pittsburgh Alleghenies (now Pirates), and Philadelphia Phillies.

A skilled outfielder and fair-to-middling batter, he was trusted enough to serve as the team's business manager in Chicago.
