Answer: Frank Borman

Frank Borman II trained as an Air Force pilot before joining the NASA space program in 1962. His first space flight was the Gemini 7 with Jim Lovell, spending a total of two weeks in space. Later, his Apollo 8 mission with Jim Lovell and Bill Anders was originally slated to be a low-orbit test of the new Lunar Module, however it wasn't ready in time, so Apollo 8 became the first mission to fly to the moon instead, entering lunar orbit on Christmas Eve 1968. Borman was offered the position of Commander of Apollo 11, which would have made him the first person to set foot on the moon, but he opted to retire instead.
