Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This island supposedly sunk under the sea. The civilization was extremely advanced. Plato was the first to write about it. What island was this?

Answer: Atlantis

Theories as to where Atlantis was located range from the Atlantic Ocean to the Island of Crete.
2. This event happened in or around West Virginia. There were reports of a winged creature with red eyes that scared many people with bizarre stunts such as chasing a car moving well over 100 mph. It is also rumored that he made a bridge collapse in West Virginia. Which creature was this?

Answer: The Mothman

The movie "The Mothman Prophecies" was based on this event. The bridge connecting Point Pleasant to Ohio was the bridge that collapsed, killing 46. Two bodies were never found.
3. These murders happened in New Orleans in the early 1900's. The murderer killed mostly Italian grocers. Which of these was a common name for this crazed killer?

Answer: The Demon Axeman

On March 19 he threatened to kill anyone not listening to jazz. Throughout New Orleans jazz could be heard playing in almost every house. Surprisingly, no one was killed. To my knowledge there never was a New Orleans Strangler, but there was a Boston Strangler.
4. This mystery involves a party of 30 men finding gold and silver in New Mexico. They went back for more leaving three coded messages behind, but the party never returned. Who was the leader of the party, in which the mystery is named after?

Answer: Thomas Beale

All the other options are names of people who tried to crack the code. Only one of these messages has been decoded. It gave the description of the treasure they found and what kind of containers that it is held in. The first message supposedly gives the treasures hidden location and the third gives a list of relatives of the members of the party. If they never returned, the treasure was supposed to be divided by the relatives.

Some people believe there is actually still more treasure buried out there.
5. A mystery involving a UFO crash in 1947. Supposedly three alien bodies were discovered. The government said it was a weather balloon. Which town's air base was the evidence taken to?

Answer: Roswell

Jimmy Carter promised to make information on UFOs public, but he never said a word while in office.
6. This is a famous urban legend thought to have happened in 1943. A group of unknown scientists tried to make a ship invisible. Some of the crew were found fused to the hull, others went insane, and some were never found again. What was the name of this event?

Answer: Philadelphia Experiment

In the story, the ship chosen for this experiment was the USS Eldridge. It's not known if scientists were trying to make the ship invisible to radar or to sight. A person by the name of Carlos Allende wrote letters describing the event to a man named Morris K. Jessup. Jessup later apparently committed suicide.

He was an unsuccessful author at the time and this act was thought to have been done to drum up sales and hype.
7. This murderer did his killing in 1888 near the Whitechapel area of London. He killed mostly prostitutes. What was the name of this person?

Answer: Jack the Ripper

After one of the murders, the message "The Juwes are the men that will not be blamed for nothing" was found written in chalk on a wall near the site. Sir Charles Warren ordered it clean before photographers could record it. This makes some suspect that he was protecting someone of great importance.
8. This serial killer killed in Vallejo, California. He killed a confirmed 5 but may have killed as many as 37. Most of the murders were in 1969 and he wrote the police many coded messages. What is the nickname of this mysterious murderer?

Answer: Zodiac Killer

He attacked both women and men, but he made sure the woman ALWAYS died. He said in one of his messages that "Hunting humans was the most exciting of all sports."
9. A man hijacked a plane in 1971. He parachuted out with $200,000 but was never heard of again. What was his REAL name (Note: the name he used when buying the ticket)?

Answer: Dan Cooper

He is commonly called D. B. Cooper because a law enforcement official accidently referred to him with that name and it stuck.
10. This man was a member of a band and supposedly died in a car accident. Clues were given about his "death" in the band's songs. What was the name of this band member?

Answer: Paul McCartney

Supposedly Paul McCartney got into a car accident on Wednesday morning at 5 o'clock (like in the song 'She's Leaving Home'). He was looking at a meter maid (Lovely Rita). He got into a car accident and a crowd of people gathered around (A Day in the Life). There are many other "clues" in their songs, but there are just too many to list.
