Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the capital of Guernsey?

Answer: St Peter Port

The town is set into a hill and also contains the main harbour which has daily trips to England, St Malo in France and several of the other Channel Islands.
2. Which French author spent much time in Guernsey, and wrote many of his famous works while a resident of the island?

Answer: Victor Hugo

Hugo's residence, called Hauteville House, is still maintained as a museum and is found in the centre of the capital, St Peter Port.
3. Which French artist also spent time in the island, creating several paintings commemorated in a set of Bailiwick stamps in 1983?

Answer: Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Many of the paintings Renoir made were of Moulin Huet Bay in the parish of St Martin's.
4. Which former England footballer comes from the island?

Answer: Matt Le Tissier

The former Southampton legend surprisingly played only 8 times for England, and arguably should have chosen to play for one of the other Home nations (as he would have been allowed to do being from the island). He stuck with the Saints throughout his entire career in spite of numerous offers from major clubs, scoring 209 goals in 540 games from midfield, including 49 out of 50 penalties.
5. Was Guernsey occupied during the Second World War?

Answer: Yes

Many of the German army's forts can still be seen dotted around the coast of the island.
6. What colour are the Guernsey pound notes?

Answer: Green

Both English and Jersey notes and coins can also be used in the island, although the currency of either island cannot be used on the mainland.
7. What colour are Guernsey post-boxes?

Answer: Blue

Both post-boxes and telephone boxes are painted blue in the Bailiwick.
8. Until its collapse in 2020, which passenger airliner made regular trips from several UK airports to the island, including Birmingham, Norwich and Exeter?

Answer: FlyBe

The airline was originally named Jersey European, and established itself as one of the foremost national intercity airlines. Unfortunately, it filed for administration in March 2020 and all operations ceased.
9. Which top racing driver was born on Guernsey?

Answer: Andy Priaulx

Priaulx is a double World Touring Car Champion in 2005 and 2006, and also triumphed in the 2004 European Touring Car Championships, raising questions about the possibility of an eventual seat in Formula 1.
10. Which infamous actor spent much time on the island?

Answer: Oliver Reed

Reed, although undoubtedly a highly talented actor, died suddenly in 1999, and struggled with alcohol abuse for many years. His time in Guernsey was originally self-imposed as he was a tax exile from the UK.
