Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Animals: Why is it commonly believed that dogs can predict earthquakes?

Answer: Because they can sense ultra-sonic waves and feel magnetic shifts in the Earth.

It is believed that dogs are super-sensitive to feeling the magnetic shifts on Earth. Consequently they feel the earthquake rumblings deep in the earth before any other living being. They can also sense ultra-sonic waves, which break right before an earthquake, and start reacting wildly - which in turn can trigger the attention of us humans and help prevent and prepare for what's to come. Finally, the sixth sense is indeed a fact, that sense being an intuition that alerts them to danger.

This last attribute applies not only to "earthquake-like situations" but also to the presence of strangers, for instance, which may represent danger at times.
2. BRAIN TEASERS: Which US state could you gather from this: WHY do people praise Sandra OH so much? I don't find her that talented but my wife keeps going on about it. I'd rather just sit on my couch and watch highlights of Yao MING's career.

Answer: Wyoming

Wyoming is located on the Northwest of the American nation and has Cheyenne as its capital. Laramie is the most populated county in a state that is the least populous of the entire nation. Notable people? Actor Matthew Fox ("LOST", "Vantage Point") was raised in the county of Crowheart, for instance.
3. Celebrities: Emilio, Ramon, Renée and Charlie go together. Why?

Answer: Because they are the acting siblings Estevez.

Charlie Sheen's actual name is Carlos Estevez and he's clearly the best known out of this troupe of acting siblings (known for the movie "Wall Street" or the sitcom "Two and a Half Men", for instance). Emilio Estevez is known for starring in "The Breakfast Club" and his brief marriage with Paula Abdul in the 90's. Ramon Estevez Jr. and Renée Estevez are also actors but perhaps not as well known as the former two.
4. Entertainment: Why is Tyra Banks afraid of dolphins? I'll tell you right after you answer. But what is the name of the phobia related to dolphins?

Answer: Delfiniphobia

According to her she has nightmares where the dolphins are bumping her and she's frightened. Go figure. Cetaphobia is related to whales, galeophobia to sharks and Defecaloesiophobia to painful bowels movements.
5. For Children: Let's awaken the child within you now. In "Little Red Riding Hood" which question isn't made by the girl to the wolf when disguised as her grandma?

Answer: "Why Florida?"

Hopefully made you chuckle there. "Little Red Riding Hood" was first published by Charles Perrault, being a French/European fairy tale. All of the other answers are part of the dialogue established in the fable. Most notably "Why is your mouth so big?" which is the last question asked before the wolf turns on to attack the little girl.
6. General Knowledge: Why is the Irish flag green, white and orange?

Answer: The green represents the Gaelic and Norman traditions, orange the Protestant planter stock and supporters of William Orange and white the peace and truce between the green and orange traditions.

These colors are displayed vertically, green being on the left, the center belonging to white and on right is orange. It is commonly known as the Irish tricolour and was adopted in 1919.
7. Geography: Why was the Portuguese island of Madeira set on fire after first being settled by sailors of that nation?

Answer: Due to the forest being so dense

The island burned for a total of seven years. It's known that Italian sailors first passed through the island but it would only be the Portuguese claiming the land in 1418. A clear example of the rich forest landscape can be verified by the name given to the capital city of the island, Funchal, which was applied due to abundance of fennel ("funcho" being the Portuguese word for it).
8. History: Why was the High Duke of Poland, Leszek II, nicknamed "The Black"?

Answer: Because he had black hair.

He reigned from 1279 to 1288 and left no descendants. The nickname is first referenced in the 14th century Chronicle. Other monarchs that have shared this nickname were Conan IV, Duke of Brittany and Fulk III of Anjou.
9. Hobbies: Why is the dessert Pavlova named that way?

Answer: It is named so after Russian ballet dancer Anna Pavlova.

Originating in New Zealand, Pavlova is based on meringue. A biographer of Anna Pavlova claims that the reason for the dessert's name was based upon the fact that Miss Pavlova visited New Zealand on her 1926 world tour and therefore a local chef based in Wellington named the dish after her.
10. Humanities: Alzheimer's. Parkinson's. Huntington's. Tourette's. One of these conditions is the odd one out, which and (obviously) why?

Answer: Alzheimer because it's the only one that isn't a name of a location as well.

There's the Brisbane suburb of Parkinson in Australia, various locations around the globe named Huntington (like the suburb in Hamilton (New Zealand) or the village in Herefordshire (England), just to name a couple). Finally we have the commune of Tourettes in France.
11. Literature: Enjoyed that odd one out? Let's have another. Henrik Ibsen - Eça de Queiroz - Tom Taylor - Archibald MacLeish. Which is the odd one out and why?

Answer: Archibald MacLeish because he's the only non-European writer.

Archibald MacLeash was born in Glencoe, Illinois, USA. Henrik Ibsen was born in Skien, Norway; Tom Taylor in Sunderland, England and Eça de Queiroz in Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal. All died after 1900, except for Tom Taylor (1880).
12. Movies: Let's move on to the Silver Screen category now. Why do the characters of Cuba Gooding Jr. and Horatio Sanz end up on a gay cruise on the 2002 romantic comedy "Boat Trip"?

Answer: Because a travel agent decides to book them into one in revenge.

This happens after a parking incident. The travel agent in charge of booking their cruise happens to be the same person who had a parking incident with them just before they enter the agency. As predicted this escalates into some verbal fighting, so another agent (played by Will Ferrell) decides to book them into a gay cruise when both bachelors were actually trying to book the exact opposite of that.
13. Music: "Three little words and a question: why?". That's the title of this quiz, right. Do you perhaps recognize it? It's also the line of a song, which?

Answer: "The Funeral of Hearts" by HIM

As some of you might recall: "The heretic seal beyond divine, a prayer to a god who's deaf and blind, the last rites for souls on fire, three little words and a question: why?". "The Funeral of Hearts", a song by Finnish rock band HIM was the first single released from their highly successful 2003 album "Love Metal".

The video clip for the song was filmed in the outskirts of Umeå, Sweden.
14. People: The 14th Dalai Lama has been a famous bald-headed figure to the world ever since he was enthroned in the year 1950. What's his given name?

Answer: Tenzin Gyatso

Alternative spelling Tenzing Gyatso, if you will. He was born in 1935 and recognised as the future Dalai Lama very early on (as usual) during the year of 1937. All of the other options consist of previous Dalai Lamas. Thubten Gyatso was the 13th Dalai Lama and the predecessor of the current one.

He reigned from the 31st of July 1879 to the 17th December 1933. Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso was the 5th Dalai Lama and "ruled" from 1642 to 1682. Last but by no means least, Gendup Drup was the 1st Dalai Lama.

His title was only conferred posthumously though (same with the 2nd Dalai Lama, Gendun Gyatso). Only the 3rd Dalai Lama, Sonam Gyatso, was the first to actually be enthroned.
15. Religion: Those following the Islamic faith are not permitted to do certain things that those outside their faith may do. Which of these shouldn't Muslims do?

Answer: Eat pork

They can do all other three, though reading the Bible is probably the one option you'll find them doing the least. They shouldn't have problems while visiting Israel as part of its population is Muslim. "Halal", meaning permissible, naturally implies food that can be eaten. Which isn't the case with pork, which is expressly forbidden in the Koran as a harmful food.
16. Science & Technology: What qualities make Mars the most habitable planet in our solar system after Earth?

Answer: It has an atmosphere, gravity, soil contains water, enough sunlight and not so extreme climate.

That was a friendly one, right? Although it is thin there is an atmosphere on Mars. The gravity is 38% of that on Earth and existent sunlight is good enough to use solar panels. Despite all of these factors the predictions for Mars being inhabited are still relatively distant, if to ever become a reality.
17. Sports: Why is it fair to say that soccer teams Sporting CP, Aston Villa, Marítimo and Chelsea share a common bond?

Answer: Because all four have a lion represented on their logos.

Again, a relatively friendly one, at least to our European and/or soccer fans. Only Chelsea and Aston Villa have blue as one of their kit colours, while Sporting and Marítimo share the green one. Chelsea (London) and Aston Villa (Birmingham) are English teams while Sporting CP (Lisbon) and Marítimo (Funchal) are Portuguese teams.
18. Television: Why wasn't Dr. Mark Greene featured in the 9th season of "ER"?

Answer: Because he died of cancer during season 8.

Dr. Mark Greene (played by Anthony Edwards) died as a result of a brain tumor on the 21st episode of season 8, "On The Beach". His wife Dr. Elizabeth Corday (Alex Kingston) makes her final appearance as a series regular on the 4th episode of season 11, "Fear".

She makes her definitive last appearance on 22nd and final episode of the series, "And in the End...". "ER" lasted for 15 seasons, totaling 331 episodes.
19. Video Games: Time to geek it up. Why would it be harder for you to obtain success with teams Virgin, Lotus and HRT while playing the video game F1 2011?

Answer: They have no KERS system.

KERS (kinetic energy recovery system) was fully introduced into F1 during the 2009 season and has proved to be of great help for teams. These 3 teams did not have it, which therefore made them slightly weaker than all others, be it on the game or on the actual motor sports world reality. All teams have cars with DRS (drag reduction system) and certainly are featured on the game. None of them exists under the terminology that is present at this game however. Lotus is now Caterham, Virgin is now Marussia (though it already had Marussia on its name as well during this game, the main one used for racing was still Virgin) and HRT ceased to compete at the end of the 2012 season.
20. World: Now for the finale..."The Return to the Odd Ones Out". Language is the subject now. French - Portuguese - Romanian - English. Which is the odd one out and why?

Answer: English because it is not a Romance language.

Portuguese, French and Romanian are all Romance languages while English is a West Germanic language. Romanian isn't alone as a language with an alphabet which contains characters that couldn't be typed in a standard keyboard. Portuguese too, for instance, has such characters like the letter "Ç". French, Portuguese and English are official languages in countries outside of Europe while Romanian is not.

As for Star Trek fans in Romania: really have no idea about that.
