Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Everyone knows that the yellow part of an egg is called the yolk, but what is the name for the clear liquid part that turns white when cooked?

Answer: Albumen

Constituting approximately two-thirds of the overall weight of a chicken egg, the albumen is made up of about 90% water and 10% proteins. When making mousse or meringue, one needs to separate the albumen from the yolk, as these dishes require whipped egg whites in their preparation.
2. The White Cliffs of Dover, as immortalised in Vera Lynn's World War II recording of "(There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover", are located in which county of England?

Answer: Kent

Known as 'The Garden of England', the county of Kent is located in the far south east of the country, and is the tenth largest county of England by area. The famous cliffs, which face out across the English Channel towards France, are composed primarily of chalk, which gives them their unmistakable appearance.
3. What a beautiful picture. The wintry precipitation has made everything snow white. Please pardon the tenuous link, and tell me - if you were to line up Snow White's seven dwarfs in alphabetical order, which dwarf would be stood in the middle position?

Answer: Grumpy

The seven dwarfs in alphabetical order are - Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, and Sneezy. Although they appeared in the original nineteenth-century Brothers Grimm fairy tale, the seven dwarfs did not actually have names. The 1912 Broadway play "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" gave the dwarfs the names Blick, Flick, Glick, Snick, Plick, Whick, and Quee, with the names we are more familiar with today being given to the dwarfs in the 1937 Walt Disney Productions' animated film version of the tale.
4. Although somewhat worshiped or valued as symbols of good fortune and power in countries such as India, Thailand and Burma, the meaning of a "white elephant" in western culture has which of the following less positive connotations?

Answer: Something owned that is more trouble than it is worth

The western use of the phrase stems from the fact that keeping a rare albino (white) elephant in Asian countries was expensive due to the requirement of the owner to provide special food and provide access to those who wished to worship the unusual animal. A modern day example would be owning a good-looking car that was off the road more than on it because it needed so many repairs.
5. What was the name of the song released by Billy Idol in 1982 that starts with the lyrics "Hey little sister what have you done"?

Answer: White Wedding

Born William Michael Albert Broad on 30th November 1955, his stage name 'Billy Idol' was apparently prompted by him being described as "idle" by one of his schoolteachers. Perhaps one of his best known songs, "White Wedding" was released as a single from his self-titled debut album.
6. It is believed that Jack the Ripper may have been responsible for as many as eleven murders in which district in the East End of London?

Answer: Whitechapel

The "Whitechapel Murders" were eleven separate murders carried out between 3rd April 1888 and 13th February 1891 and investigated by the Metropolitan Police Service, however only five of these (often referred to as the "canonical five") are widely considered to be, in all likelihood, linked.

The serial killer, given the nickname "Jack the Ripper" was never found, and the list of possible suspects is over one hundred people.
7. Roller coasters, such as the "The Jester" from Six Flags New Orleans amusement park seen in the picture, are often referred to as "white-WHAT rides"?

Answer: knuckle

Roller coasters are often referred to as "white-knuckle rides" because an adrenaline-filled rider will often grip the retaining bar so tightly that his knuckles will appear to be white. Six Flags New Orleans amusement park was closed in August 2005 when Hurricane Katrina devastated the state of Louisiana.
8. What is the "national" name given to a cocktail made with vodka, coffee liqueur, milk and/or cream, and served with ice?

Answer: White Russian

Neither the White Russian, nor its counterpart, the Black Russian (which is basically a White Russian without milk/cream) originated from Russia, however were so named because of the primary ingredient in both - Vodka - being strongly associated with Russia.
9. Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington D.C., the White House has been the official home of the President of the USA for over 200 years, but who was the first president to reside in the White House?

Answer: John Adams

It wasn't until the last few months of his presidency that John Adams, the second President of the USA, moved into the at-the-time unfinished President's Mansion on 1st November 1800. It was around 1811 that the building first started being referred to as the White House, a moniker that has stuck to the present day.
10. By what weather-related nickname is English professional snooker player Jimmy White known?

Answer: The Whirlwind

James Warren White was born on 2nd May 1962, and turned professional in 1980. White has won the Masters, the UK Championship, and the World Open, but, despite being a finalist on six occasions (including five in a row in the early 1990s), he has never won the World Championship.

His popularity with the fans and rapid, positive style of play led to him being given the nickname of "The Whirlwind".
