Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We'll start with the obvious. What food item is an oatcake like?

Answer: Pancake

It is a kind of pancake made from oatmeal, flour, baking powder, shortening and water. It is usually cooked on a griddle or 'baxton'.
2. What is the West Midlands county that is most famous for its oatcakes? In fact, these oatcakes are exported from there to expats all over the world.

Answer: Staffordshire

Oatcakes are a local specialty in North Staffordshire. They have often been called 'Staffordshire oatcakes' or 'potteries oatcakes' by non-locals because they are made in the area. It was once common for the oatcakes to be directly sold through the window of a house to customers in the street.

There are very few of these old-time businesses left, but there are many small commercial businesses that sell their own products. There are also large commercial enterprises that sell oatcakes to supermarkets and even on-line.
3. What country directly to the north of England also claims to be the home of the oatcake?

Answer: Scotland

These flat cakes, made mainly from oats, have for centuries been considered the Scottish national bread. They are quick and easy to make. While they were previously a staple part of the diet, they are now used in a similar way to a French baguette or as an accompaniment to pâté, cheese and wine.
4. Although oatcakes are so popular around Stoke-on-Trent, I was surprised to find that there was a fanzine called "The Oatcake". What is it about? (Hint: don't go for the obvious).

Answer: Football

"The Oatcake" is devoted to providing information on the English Association Football team, Stoke City Football Club. It is well known for its politically incorrect cartoons on both Stoke-on-Trent and football in general. It contains satirical articles on football as well as letters, match reports and information about away games.

It is, of course, named after the local delicacy, the oatcake.
5. I found that oatcakes are sold in the most unlikely locations, like this particular place. I can't guarantee that the traditional recipe has withstood the transition here. Where did I find these oatcakes? (Hint: here they might be served with pineapple on the side).

Answer: Oahu

Starbucks on Oahu serves Starbucks Low Fat Oatcakes made by the Honolulu Baking Company. This food has managed to achieve cult status despite the fact that it is as dense as concrete. It contains dried fruit and makes a cheap breakfast or lunch with a cup of coffee--Starbucks, of course.
6. Oatcakes are healthy as well as delicious. The makers of Nairn's Rough Oat Cakes make a point of their product's low calorie count. What is the calorie amount for an 11g serving?

Answer: 46 calories

As this is a very small serve, I am not sure that the calorie count is impressive, but the amount of fat in it is only 3% and sodium is only 4%. Oats can, however, play an important part in a healthy diet. They have a low GI, and help to lower cholesterol and keep you regular.
7. Oatcakes have now made it in the world of the aristocracy. On the website information for visitors, Dalhousie Castle, near Edinburgh, advertises its homemade oatcakes and gives the recipe. By what train do the castle owners advise visitors to come from London to Edinburgh?

Answer: The Flying Scotsman

The Flying Scotsman has been an express passenger service between London and Edinburgh since 1862. It is operated by East Coast. The oatcakes made at the castle have sugar added and do not have the same taste or texture as the classic Staffordshire ones.
8. Which of these is NOT an alternate name for the traditional English oatcake? (Hint: The locals like to pretend it is their version of a foreign delicacy).

Answer: Stoke Slice

North Staffordshire is rich in local word usage. Local products often have affectionate nicknames.
9. A well-known English playwright, poet, teacher and artist, who was born in Stoke-on-Trent in 1925 and died in 1994, wrote "Ode to the Oatcake". What was his name?

Answer: Arthur Berry

Arthur Berry is a true icon of North Staffordshire. He used his many talents not just for his own creative work, but to teach others. His love for his home county shines through all of his paintings, drawings and writings. An example of his humour is his "Ode to the Oatcake".

Excerpt:

"Let us pay homage to the Oatcake
Or Oatcake or woodcake as the old men called them
The oatcake is not a cake at all really
Not like the fairy cake or the Eccles cake
Not a cake in that way
More of a Potteries Papadum
A sort of Tunstall Tortilla
A Clay Suzette"
10. In the north of the UK, there is a tribute band named for the oatcake. What is its name? (Hint: Axl)

Answer: Guns 'n' Oatcakes

Guns 'n' Oatcakes are not just a tribute band for Guns N' Roses. They cover other artists such as Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, AC/DC, Def Leppard, Brian Adams, U2, Thin Lizzy and Gary Moore. They pride themselves on their sense of humour and aim to provide a good night's entertainment for their fans.
