Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tiber River

Answer: Rome, Italy

The Tiber flows southward past Perugia and Rome and into the Tyrrhenian Sea at Ostia, Italy. According to Roman legend it was the river into which the founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus, were thrown. The river is featured prominently in many movies filmed in Rome. A 2009 documentary titled "Hollywood On The Tiber" chronicled the history of film making in Italy.
2. Mississippi River

Answer: St. Louis, USA

The source of the Mississippi River is Lake Itasca in Minnesota. It meets the Missouri River in St. Louis and the Ohio River at Cairo, Illinois. It flows into the Gulf of Mexico. By volume it is the fifth largest river in the world.
3. Tennessee River

Answer: Paducah, USA

The Tennessee River flows into the Ohio River at Paducah. It was formerly known as the Cherokee River. The name of the state and the river is derived from a Cherokee village called "Tanasi". The river flows through three states: Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama.
4. East River

Answer: New York City

Technically the East River is not a river but a salt water estuary. It separates the boroughs of Queens and The Bronx in New York City. It was once known as the "Sound River" because of its connection to Long Island Sound. Its current is subject to strong fluctuations due to the variety of depths and the fact that it is narrow.
5. Rio Grande

Answer: El Paso, Texas

The Rio Grande is also known in Mexico as "Rio Bravo del Norte". It forms part of the border between the United States and Mexico. It is either the fourth or fifth largest river in North America depending upon how it is measured. The Rio Grande has twelve tributaries.
6. Seine River

Answer: Paris, France

The Pont Alexander III and the Pont Neuf are just two of the 37 bridges that cross the river in Paris alone with several more outside the city. The river has flooded or risen to threatening levels several times. In 2003 nearly 100,000 works of art were moved out of Paris after a level one flood warning. The Seine is 483 miles long.
7. Potomac River

Answer: Washington, DC

The Potomac River runs 405 miles. Its source is Fairfax Stone State Park in West Virginia. Its mouth is Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. The name is derived from the name "Patawomeck" which originated with the Algonquin tribe of Native Americans who settled on its southern bank.
8. Thames River

Answer: London, England

In parts of England the Thames is known as the Isis River. It flows into the North Sea. There is considerable evidence of human habitation along the river as far back as the Neolithic Era. Under the reign of King John in the 13th century the London Bridge was built, creating concerns that it would affect the tidal flow upstream and increase the likelihood of freezing over.
9. Missouri River

Answer: Great Falls, Montana

The Missouri is the longest river in North America. It flows east and south from the Rockies in western Montana into the Mississippi in St. Louis. At least ten Native American tribes lived along the river. During the western expansion in the 1800s it was one of the main routes.
10. Danube River

Answer: Vienna, Austria

The Danube is the second longest river in Europe, second to the Volga. Of its 1770 miles, 1501 miles of it are navigable. The largest river delta in the European Union is the Danube Delta, lying mostly in Romania. The German school of landscape painting was developed in the Danube valley in the 16th century.
