Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We start high in the Hindu Kush Mountains, at the highest point in Afghanistan. Where are we? Elevation: 24,580 feet

Answer: Noshaq

Noshaq is on the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan. It was first ascended in 1960, but it wasn't ascended by an Afghan until 2009.
2. We now head down a little bit, to a Peruvian mining city that is one of the highest cities in the world. Where are we? Elevation: 16,700 feet

Answer: La Rinconada

Unfortunately, horrible conditions exist in the city of La Rinconada, and the miners get very low pay. The system in La Rinconada has miners mining for thirty days without pay and on the 31st day, they can carry out as much ore as they can on their shoulders, only making money if there is gold in the ore. La Rinconada is located near Lake Titicaca and near Bolivia. La Rinconada is slightly higher than the highest inhabited place in Asia, Wenquan, China, at 16,467 feet.
3. We head further down, to the highest location in the 48 contiguous states in the United States of America. This location is also known for being only 85 miles away from the lowest location in the contiguous 48 states. Where are we now? Elevation: 14,505 feet.

Answer: Mount Whitney

Mount Marcy is the highest mountain in New York. Mount Elbert is the highest mountain in Colorado. Kings Peak is the highest mountain in Utah. Death Valley is the lowest point in the continental United States, and it is only 85 miles southeast of Mount Whitney.
4. Heading further down still, we head to a major city in Tibet, and one of the highest major cities in the world. Elevation: 11,975 feet.

Lhasa is the capital and largest city in Tibet. It is located in the eastern portion of the Tibetan Plateau, and along the Kyi River. Unfortunately, Tibetans suffer much discrimination due to measures taken by the Chinese government, such as needing permission to reincarnate.
5. Down we go, until we reach the highest mountain in Germany. Where are we now? Elevation: 9,718 feet.

Answer: Zugspitze

All of the highest mountains in Germany are in Bavaria. Zugspitze is on the border with Austria. There is a mountain hut and a weather station at the top of Zugspitze.
6. Falling further, we head to the lowest point in Lesotho, which is at the confluence of the Orange and what river? Elevation: 4,593 feet.

Answer: Makhaleng

The lowest point in Lesotho is the highest lowest point in the world. Lesotho is surrounded by South Africa. Only two other countries are surrounded by another country, them being San Marino and Vatican City, both surrounded by Italy.
7. Further down we go, until we reach the highest point in Florida. We are not very high anymore, in fact, this is the lowest high point out of any state in the country! Where are we? Elevation: 345 feet.

Answer: Britton Hill

The other three points are the highest points in other U.S states. The Ebright Azimuth is the highest point in Delaware, at 448 feet. Driskill Mountain is the highest point in Louisiana, at 535 feet. Jerimoth Hill is the highest point in Rhode Island, at 812 feet.
8. We've reached sea level! Sea level can be found along the coast anywhere in the world. Which country has the shortest coastline out of countries with a coastline?

Answer: Monaco

Monaco only has 2.5 miles of coastline. Bosnia and Herzegovina only has one city with coastline, however it has 12 miles of coastline.
9. Going further down and ending up on land seems impossible, but we can go over 1000 feet down and still be on dry land! The next place we are going to visit is the lowest point on dry land, and is on the border of Israel and Jordan. Where are we visiting next? Elevation: -1371 feet.

Answer: Dead Sea

Don't get confused by its name; the Dead Sea is a lake. The Dead Sea is also one of the saltiest lakes in the world, so dense that anyone can float easily while reading the newspaper.
