Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the least populated areas of Russia is which large eastern peninsula that juts out into the sea between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk?

Answer: The Kamchatka Peninsula

The Kamchatka Peninsula is one of the most beautiful and inaccessible areas of Russia. It is home to many spectacular hot springs and geysers, and is known for having some of the most violent lightning storms on the planet. There are many protected areas.

When you add 29 active volcanoes, a plethora of exotic animals species and six UNESCO World Heritage sites, it becomes clear that this is a place you might think of putting on your bucket list.
2. Which of the following mountain ranges is generally accepted as being the dividing line between European Russia and Asian Russia?

Answer: Ural Mountains

The Ural Mountains have comprised the major mineral base for the country of Russia since the early 18th century. These beautiful mountains are home to many types of semi-precious stones, metal ore, and coal. They are also home to elk, fox, wolf, and brown bears.

These mountains are more accessible and easier to travel through than most mountain ranges on the planet. This is one of the more threatened areas of Russia as far as pollution and destruction of habitat is concerned. There are at least nine strictly monitored nature reserves and more are planned.
3. If you decide you want to take a cruise down Russia's national river, on which water way would you plan to travel?

Answer: Volga River

The mighty Volga River is one of the longest rivers in Russia as well as the longest river in Europe. Of the twenty largest cities in Russia, eleven of them are situated on the Volga River. The Volga is mentioned often in Russian folklore, music and literature.

In spite of its massive size, most of this river freezes over for three months every year. A river cruise down the Volga could turn out to be the trip of a lifetime.
4. If I wanted to visit the Hermitage, the Tauride Palace and the Grand Cascade, to which Russian city would I need to travel?

Answer: St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg, formerly known as both Petrograd and Leningrad is one of the most beautiful and culturally rich cities in the country of Russia. It is home to the world famous Hermitage, a museum of culture and fine art. Founded in 1764, it is one of the largest as well as oldest museums in the world. Built in the late 18th century, the Tauride Palace is a wonderful example of Palladian style architecture and includes a large park and harbor linked to the Neva River.

The Grand Cascade is an elaborate fountain complete with grottoes and gardens.

This is just a taste of what can be seen in this beautiful city.
5. Which of the following is a popular tourist destination in northwestern Russia bordering Finland?

Answer: Karelia

Karelia is an area that is located both in Finland and Russia. It is a popular tourist destination for travelers looking for natural wonders. This area is home to many picturesque lakes as well as large granite rocks and cliffs. The Altai Mountains and steppes of Tyva are populated with many rare and exotic animals found nowhere else on earth.

The Karelian culture is unique and heavily influenced by the country of Finland. This is the most culturally Scandinavian area of Russia to be found.
6. What of these striking statements about the unusual Tower of Nevyansk is true?

Answer: Has one of the oldest lightning-arresters in the world

The Tower of Nevyansk is one of the many architectural wonders that can be seen in Russia. Built in the early 18th century, this church tower boasts one the oldest lightning arresters in the world. Remember, this means it was constructed before Benjamin Franklin confirmed that lightning was actually electricity and popularised the idea of lightning rods.

This beautiful white tower also leans and is often known as the Leaning Tower of Nevyansk. Even more unusual is that this was part of the original design.

The original architect is not known, nor the original purpose for this building. It had a laboratory, an acoustic room, and may have been used as a prison, bell-tower, or watchtower. It is just one of the many enigmas of Russia.
7. Russia's beautiful Lake Baikal is not only the deepest lake in the world, it is the oldest lake in the world.

Answer: True

Pristine Lake Baikal is one of Russia's most valued treasures. It is the most voluminous freshwater lake in the world, containing about 20% of the Earth's unfrozen surface fresh water. It is also one of the clearest lakes in the world despite its great depth and age. It is home to over one thousand species of plants and animals that can be found nowhere else on earth.
8. Located in Moscow and possibly the most famous church in all of Russia, what is the more common name for The Cathedral of the Protection Of Most Holy Teotokos on the Moat?

Answer: St. Basil's Cathedral

St. Basil's, with its multi-colored, onion-shaped minarets is one of the most photographed buildings in all of Russia. Built under the orders of Ivan the Terrible, this fantastic building commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan. It is located in the geometric center of Moscow and is located on one side of the infamous Red Square.

This very unique church is often described at a colorful flame from a bonfire that rises majestically into the sky. The other three options are all found in France.
9. In the winter it is not uncommon to see bears walking down the streets of Moscow.

Answer: False

This is an old wives tale or urban myth. The area is too heavily populated, and has been for too long, for bears to feel comfortable coming into town to eat. The bear is a popular Russian symbol and was used as the mascot for the 1980 Moscow Olympic games.
10. There are some areas of Russia that have a subtropical climate.

Answer: True

It is not always cold in Russia. Southern parts of Russia are often warmer than most European countries. Some areas around the Black Sea even have palm trees. The Krasnodar region is known for its lovely weather with an average July temperature of 30C. Winter weather in this part of Russia does not usually include any snowfall.

When it does happen it is usually accompanied by a complete halt in public transportation until the snow melts, usually in only a day or two.
