Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Australia shares a border on the east with which country?

Answer: None of these

Australia is located in the southern hemisphere. Not only is it a continent in its own right, it is also considered the world's largest island. No wonder we Australians get confused. Other people, however, are even more confused as to where Australia is actually located, and invariably mix it up with Austria. We Australians tend to sigh and say, "No mate, it's a long walk to Vienna from here".

5. What is unusual about Tunnel Mountain in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada?

Answer: It does not have a tunnel

Tunnel Mountain, also known as Sleeping Buffalo because its shape resembles that snoozing animal, is located in the Bow River Valley of Banff National Park in Canada. It received its misnomer in the 1880s when the builders of the Canadian Pacific Railway had considered blasting a tunnel through it - but then changed their minds and selected another route instead, saving the company millions of dollars in the process.

6. Which sea was formed in California when rainfall and snowmelt overflowed the Alamo Canal in 1905?

Answer: Salton Sea

The Salton Sea was created when the water rushed over the headgates and breached a dike. Two new rivers were created as the water flowed from Colorado River into the Salton Sink for almost two years before it was stopped properly. The Salton Sea is 225 feet below sea level and is California's largest lake covering about 375 square miles.

8. The Lancaster Canal opened at the end of the 18th Century to transport goods from Preston in Lancashire to Kendal in Cumbria. It soon became known as "The Black and White Canal". Why was that?

Answer: It transported limestone and coal

The lovely Lancaster Canal carried (white) limestone from Kendal to Preston and (black) coal from Preston to Kendal. Sadly the top end of the Canal from Tewitfield to Kendal was cut off when the M6 Motorway was built, but a 42-mile stretch is still left - without a single lock! The Canal crosses the River Lune on a wonderful 62-foot high aqueduct built in 1797.

The Canal is not connected to the rest of the system in the UK but it's very popular with tourists and canal boaters.

9. The capital of which US state was named after the last British monarch of the House of Stuart?

Answer: Maryland

Annapolis became the state capital of Maryland in 1694, at which time it was also renamed after the future Queen Anne of Great Britain. The former name of Annapolis was 'Anne Arundel's Towne' - after an English aristocrat who was a distant cousin of Queen Elizabeth I. Queen Anne was the last reigning monarch of the House of Stuart as only one of her children from a total of 17 pregnancies survived infancy - and that child only survived to the age of 11.

The crown passed to her second cousin, King George I of the House of Hanover.
