The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel which was completed April 15, 1964, measures 17.6 miles from shore to shore and is considered the longest bridge tunnel complex in the world. It has also become one of Virginia's main tourist attractions.

The Norfolk Naval Base is also the biggest employer of Hampton Roads. It occupies a total of 4,300 acres and houses 75 ships and 134 aircraft.

Virginia has a total of 40 independent cities. The Hampton Roads region is also called the Seven Cities area because of the major independent cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Newport News, Hampton, and Suffolk. But there are also the independent cities of Williamsburg, Poquoson, and Franklin.

During the 1960s Norfolk and Portsmouth were the two dominating cities in the area. To avoid being sucked up by these two monsters, Princess Anne County merged with Virginia Beach to form what is now Va. Beach and Norfolk County merged with Chesapeake, avoiding Portsmouth, to form the Chesapeake city we have today.

The two cities now have almost twice the people of their annexing counterparts.

The James River splits the region into two sides. The Southside which is also called South Hampton Roads consists of mainly Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, and Isle of Wight County. The Peninsula region consists of Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, York County, and James City County.

Busch Gardens Williamsburg is a great place to take your family if you want great shows and plenty of fun rides. Paramount's Kings Dominion is a great place also but it's more for the thrill ride kind of guys like myself.

Suffolk is the largest city in Virginia in area with a total of 429.07 square miles (400.02 excl. water). But the very rural city has a population of only 67,000. Jacksonville has a total area 841 Square Miles making it the largest in the contiguous 48 states. New York is the largest city in population at over eight million but has a total area of 369 square miles. Dallas, with a total land area of 342 square miles is either the first or third largest city in Texas in population, depending on how you are counting. Virginia Beach is the third largest city in size in VA (248.29 sq mi)but the largest in population.

This city along with Chesapeake (350.90 sq mi) and Suffolk make up the big three of Hampton Roads.
