Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Some scholars have compared Korea's shape (including both North and South) to which animal, sans tail?

Answer: Rabbit

The ears of the bunny touch Siberia, while Cheju island is considered the misplaced cottontail...cute huh? Korean scholars have also compared the shape of the country to a tiger.
2. The northern border of Korea is created almost entirely by two rivers. The most well known river is the Yalu, but what is the other river that makes up much of the northeast border called?

Answer: Tumen

The Yalu was made famous to Americans when American troops pushed the North Koreans to that boundary (Yalu) between Korea and China during the early stages of the Korean War. Macarthur considered crossing the river into China, but Truman would have none of it. Hundreds of thousands of Chinese troops made their way across the frozen Yalu to fight and die during that war.

The Tumen makes up part of the boundary between Korea and China, and all of the short boundary between Korea and Russia.
3. Taking the two Koreas together, north and south, is it true or false that the only other country bordering Korea is China?

Answer: False

As mentioned above, about 11 miles of the North Korean border touches on Siberian Russia.
4. The highest point of either Korea (north or south) is called what?

Answer: Mt. Paektu

The name 'Paektu' means 'white head' in Korean. The Chinese call it 'Changpai shan' or 'ever-white mountain'. It rises 9,003 ft. (2744 m.) above sea level and sits at the border between North Korea and China. Mt. Halla is the highest mountain in South Korea, at 6,398 ft. (1950 m.).
5. Korea is separated from Japan by what strait?

Answer: Tsushima

The Strait of Tsushima, also known as the Korea Strait, was the scene of a great naval battle between Russia and Japan during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5. The strait is only 60-miles in width and contains Tsushima Island at its center.
6. True or false: The Koreans call the Sea of Japan the 'West Sea'.

Answer: False

Trick question alert! They actually call it the East Sea, as it lies to their east.
7. What is the name of the mountain range that runs along the eastern coast of South Korea, and runs on into North Korea for a bit?

Answer: Taebaek

The Taebaek range makes up the backbone of the rabbit. It may be surprising for some to learn that Korea is a very mountainous country, and that there are a number of very popular ski resorts throughout the country (south, of course).
8. The largest island of Korea is also considered a vacation paradise by Koreans. What is it called?

Answer: Cheju-do

Cheju-do (do = island) is the Hawaii of Korea, a semi-tropical paradise where busy Koreans can rest and relax.
9. The North Korean capital of Pyongyang lies very close to which major Korean river?

Answer: Taedong River

The Taedong River is only the 6th longest river in Korea, but it's only one of two (the Yalu being the other) which are navigable.
10. Which is larger by area, North Korea or South Korea?

Answer: North Korea

North Korea has a total land area of 47,300 square miles (122,370 square km) vs. South Korea's 38,000 square miles (98,477 square miles. Hence, North Korea makes up 55% of the total land area on the peninsula. Thank you for playing!
