Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What country is the largest landlocked nation in the Southern Hemisphere?

Answer: Bolivia

Bolivia is a country of extremes. Besides being one of the many nations in South America spined by the Andes mountains, it also shares a portion of the Amazon Rainforest in its eastern end. Depicted is the city of La Paz, one of the nation's two capitals (the other being Sucre). Notably, Bolivia has no borders with the sea making it one of two South American nations to be landlocked (the other is Paraguay).

It's the largest landlocked nation in the Southern Hemisphere as a result, but only the seventh-largest on the globe (the largest is Kazakhstan).
2. What Indian city, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, is known as the 'City of Lakes'?

Answer: Bhopal

Although all of these are destinations in India, only Bhopal fits the bill. Found smack-dab in the center of India, Bhopal is one of the nation's larger cities despite its infamy as a location of industrial disaster. Despite setbacks of a horrific nature in the 1980s, Bhopal emerged in the 2010s as one of the cleanest cities in India. And it's all the better since Bhopal, along with two natural lakes amongst his hills, is dotted with numerous artificial waterways. Bhopal is also home to India's largest mosque, Taj-ul-Masajid, depicted in this quiz.
3. This city of Angers, France in Anjou is part of what peninsular French region?

Answer: Brittany

Brittany's history dates back to old Roman settlement along the Celtic Sea though it's come a long way since then, notably because it became a site for Celtic roots to grow. It should come as no surprise that, due to its proximity to Great Britain across the water, it served as a bit of an extension for cultural reach. And that's why visitors to the Brittany region, which takes up four French departments, are likely to see a mixture of architectural styles if they visit Angers, Nantes, and Vannes, the largest of the cities found there.
4. This image looks due south from the top of the tallest hill in Jingshan Park, out across the centerpiece of what Asian city?

Answer: Beijing

The center of the Chinese capital, the image for this question looks down at the north gate of the Forbidden City-- the far end of this landmark destination leads out to Tiananmen Square. Beijing is one of the world's largest cities and one of its biggest, sprawling out in all directions.

The central region of the city, however, is home to beautiful historical parks, ancient shopping streets, markets, temples, and public squares. Jingshan, which translates to 'Prospect Hill', was artificially made. You can climb up to the top of it via steep stairs that lead to temples dotting the hillside, and from there you can have unparalleled views of the city-- the palace to the south and the Drum and Bell Towers leading to the north.
5. What Russian lake is considered the world's oldest?

Answer: Baikal

More than twenty-five million years old, Lake Baikal is a lake of world records-- it's the largest freshwater lake (by volume) and the world's deepest lake on top of being the oldest. The Transbaikalia Region, found in Siberia, is east of Krasnoyarsk and just north of the Mongolian border.

While it's tougher to get to in terms of remoteness, it does have the Trans-Siberian (and Trans-Mongolian) Railway going for it; you can ride alongside the lake at certain points. And the view is a notable one-- Baikal is often seen as one of the world's clearest lakes.
6. This is the skyline of what Queensland, Australia city, the gateway to the Gold Coast?

Answer: Brisbane

The third-largest city in Australia, Brisbane is the largest on the nation's east coast and one of the oldest on the continent having been occupied by Aboriginal tribes. Found at the south end of Queensland, Brisbane is on the Coral Sea and is one of the closest major cities to the great Barrier Reef. Featured in the photo for this city is the Story Bridge, which straddles the Brisbane River and links the city suburbs of Fortitude Valley and Kangaroo Point.

It was created by John Bradfield, the man who created the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
7. The name of this mountain, in its original Scottish Gaelic, translates to 'Venomous Mountain'. What is its common name?

Answer: Ben Nevis

The tallest peak in the British Isles, Ben Nevis is found in the Scottish Highlands and reaches a height of 1,345m. Formerly an active volcano several hundreds of millions of years ago, it's now a frequented climbing destination; it's nowhere near as high as the great peaks of most mountain ranges. Because of its height, Ben Nevis is also one of the National Three Peaks Challenge mountains alongside Snowdon in Wales and Scafell Pike in England.

In terms of location, Ben Nevis is closest to the city of Inverness.
8. The State of Bahia is found in what 'B' nation?

Answer: Brazil

Bahia is the Portuguese word for 'Bay', and while this Brazilian State is rather large, it does rest on the edge of the Atlantic where it acts as home to several beautiful bays. The largest city in the region, Salvador, is on Baía de Todos os Santos (or the Bay of All Saints), the largest bay in the country. Salvador, interestingly, was the first capital of Brazil; it was overtaken in size over the years by Rio, Sao Paulo, and the nation's capital, Brasilia.

The region's coast is home to a thriving tourist industry built around its resorts and beaches.
9. Which of these islands, overseen by the Netherlands, is part of the Lesser Antilles?

Answer: Bonaire

Part of the ABC Islands with Aruba and Curacao, you would need to head north off the coast of Venezuela to locate Bonaire, part of what was once known as the Netherlands Antilles. Due to these islands' location, they tend to be warm all year and they dodge bad weather on most accounts (very inconsistently being part of the same hurricane season as the Caribbean). Bonaire is best known for its beautiful reefs and beaches; it's a huge destination for scuba enthusiasts.
10. The north of Libya, Tunisia, and Algeria formed what historical geographical location?

Answer: Barbary Coast

For hundreds of years, the Mediterranean coastline opposite mainland Europe took on the name 'Barbary Coast' in reference to the Berber people who inhabited it. Today, that coast stretches from Morocco to the far end of Libya (before Egypt) including the port cities that grew to be Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli. These coasts are also dotted with occasional ruins, Roman and otherwise, of past communities.
Babylon is far to the east (Iraq), Bohemia was in the Czech Republic, and Batavia is the Roman era (and Pre-Roman era) region occupied today by The Netherlands.
