Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Wat Chedi Luang, depicted, sits in the center of what Northern Thai city's Old Town?

Answer: Chiang Mai

The largest city in Chiang Mai Province, Chiang Mai happens to be the most populated location in Northern Thailand, nestled in the mountains and jungles. Although the city contains a number of beautiful wat temples, Wat Chedi Luang is one of the most stunning as it sits in ruins atop a tall base that was once the highest constructed location in the Lan Na Kingdom. Today, it's a religious tourist location and home to the city pillar and several other sites of worship. Visitors can't climb the stairs to the top, but it's still a sight to behold from every angle.
2. The Bridge of the Gods stands atop which river in Cascade Locks, Oregon?

Answer: Columbia River

Found in Northwestern Oregon along the Washington state border, Cascade Locks is built on a portion of the Columbia River containing a series of rapids. The Bridge of the Gods was named after a geological feature that found its home in the region; the original was a natural dam for the river that washed away over millennia.

The modern bridge is an arresting landmark. A unique architectural feat composed of steel trussing, the Bridge opened in 1926 and became a necessary spot on the Pacific Crest Trail.

The Columbia, running underneath, flows from the Rockies in British Columbia all the way south through Washington and Oregon before emptying into the Pacific.
3. Which of these cities, for centuries, was the largest capital city on its respective continent?

Answer: Cairo

Historically, the world's most populated cities have changed drastically, hopping from continent to continent depending on a variety of circumstances. Cairo, the capital city of Egypt, shared the title of largest city with Hangzhou and Jinling, China throughout the fourteenth century. Thousands of years before this, the ancient cities of Thebes (now Luxor) and Memphis (now south of Giza) also held this title. Cairo, in modern times, is still the largest Arab city on the planet and has held more people in its greater area than any African capital.

It is, of course, home to the Great Pyramids.
4. What Canadian city, home to the Saddledome, is the largest city of Alberta (though not its capital)?

Answer: Calgary

Well, the capital of Alberta is actually Edmonton, but the skyline seen in the photo for this one should indicate Calgary because that's the home of the Saddledome, the primary venue for the world-famous Calgary Stampede. One of the largest cities in Western Canada, it's technically a prairie city (since the prairie provinces are Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta) though it sits adjacent to the foothills of the Rockies to the east. Due to its cold, snowy winters, proximity to the mountains, and highly-regarded livability, it's no surprise it was a Canadian Olympic destination and a destination for industry and commerce (especially in oil).
5. The second-oldest English-speaking university, founded in the early 13th century, can be found in what UK city?

Answer: Cambridge

The University of Cambridge, England's second-oldest university (after Oxford), was established in 1209 and is the centrepiece of Cambridgeshire County, northwest of London. Although believed to be a settlement for early man during prehistoric times, it was also used as a fort by the Romans and then to a larger extent in the medieval era as a fortified town surrounded by since-drained wetlands.

Besides the University, Cambridge is also known as a site of arts and culture, famous churches, and the River Cam itself, notable for its punting boats.
6. Which of these, the largest city of the Maghreb Region, is on the Atlantic Ocean?

Answer: Casablanca

While Conakry, the capital of Guinea, is an Atlantic African city, the Maghreb region only takes in the northwest corner of Africa. Casablanca is one of the largest cities in Morocco and amongst the largest Arabic cities in the world. First settled nearly three thousand years ago, Casablanca was suitably placed as a port city and its location made it the ideal spot for Portuguese, Spanish, and French influences to filter in. Depicted is the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world and one of the city's most recognizable landmarks.
7. One of Europe's longest mountain ranges, which of these stretches through Austria, Poland, Romania, and half a dozen other countries?

Answer: The Carpathian Mountains

The Carpathians consist of several ranges stretching between Poland and Romania and the largest peaks therein are further to the north. This being said, these mountains are most famously photographed further to the south; major cities of Romania like Brașov in Transylvania are characterized by these peaks, covered with dark conifer forests.

In the north, towards Slovakia, the Tatra Range are snow-capped; the tallest of these peaks, Gerlachovský stít, reaches an altitude of 2,654 meters.
8. This body of water, also considered a lake, sits between Europe and Asia and takes in water from the Volga. What is its name?

Answer: The Caspian Sea

Although it's known as a sea, the Caspian is classed as a lake. Technically, it's actually an endorheic basin into which several waterways flow with no natural outflow. Additionally, the Caspian Sea is one of the lowest bodies of water on the planet, rising to twenty-eight meters below sea level.

The Caspian sits between Europe and Asia and can be visited from Kazakhstan, Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkmenistan. The only world capital on the Caspian is Baku, Azerbaijan.
9. Which of these 'C' countries is NOT divided into provinces?

Answer: Croatia

To be honest, there are a LOT of provincially-divided countries out there, and a lot of them start with the letter 'C', so this question really only had a couple possible solutions. Of the world's 'C' nations, Croatia is split into counties; Cameroon has regions and departments; Cape Verde has councils and parishes; the Central African Republic has prefectures; Chad, a French-created nation, has regions and departments; Colombia has departments; Comoros has prefectures; the Czech Republic has regions. Costa Rica, Cuba, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, and China all have provinces.
10. The 'C' cities of Concepción and Coquimbo and the open pit mine known as Chuquicamata are all locations in what 'C' nation?

Answer: Chile

It may be a bit misleading, but the image associated with this question is Coyhaique, another Chilean 'C' city, found in Patagonia. This said, there are Cs across the country. Concepción is one of the country's largest cities and fairly central along its coastline; Coquimbo is further to the north; Chuquicamata, a mine in the Atacama Desert, is way further north than both of these and is the largest open pit copper mine in the world. Chuquicamata, interestingly, is more than one thousand kilometres away from Santiago, the nation's capital. For comparison, it would take just as long to drive from New York City to New Orleans.
