Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A state with an Atlantic coast.

Answer: New Jersey

The three possible answers for this were Louisiana, New Jersey, and South Carolina. Louisiana had to be used for the Mississippi question, and South Carolina for the Confederacy question, leaving only New Jersey.

Louisiana is on the Gulf of Mexico, which is a marginal sea (a subset) of the Atlantic Ocean, according to the International Hydrographic Organization.
2. A state with a Pacific coast.

Answer: Oregon

The two possible answers for this question were Alaska and Oregon. This was the only question in the quiz that Oregon was a viable answer for.
3. A state with a Great Lakes coast.

Answer: Wisconsin

The only possible answer in this quiz for this question was Wisconsin. There are eight states with a Great Lake coast: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. There is only one Canadian province with a Great Lake coast: Ontario.
4. A state on the Mississippi River.

Answer: Louisiana

The two possible answers for this question were Louisiana and Wisconsin. Wisconsin had to be used for the Great Lakes question, so that left Louisiana as the only answer.
5. A state that has a land border with another nation.

Answer: North Dakota

This question had a lot of possible answers: Alaska, New Mexico, and North Dakota. North Dakota was only viable for this question and the cardinal direction question, but the cardinal direction question went to West Virginia, so the only question left for North Dakota was this one.
6. A state with the word "New" in its name.

Answer: New Mexico

The two possible answers in this quiz were New Jersey and New Mexico. New Jersey had to be used for the Atlantic question, leaving only New Mexico for this one.
7. A state with a cardinal direction in its name.

Answer: West Virginia

The three possible answers for this question were North Dakota, South Carolina, and West Virginia. This was the only question in this quiz that West Virginia was a valid answer for.
8. A Four Corners state.

Answer: Colorado

The two possible answers for this question were Colorado and New Mexico (the other two Four Corners states are Arizona and Utah). This was the only question in this quiz that Colorado was a viable answer for.
9. A state that was part of the Confederate States of America.

Answer: South Carolina

The two possible answers for this quiz were Louisiana and South Carolina. Louisiana had to be used for the Mississippi question, leaving only South Carolina. West Virginia explicitly separated from Virginia to not join the Confederacy.
10. A state that was admitted to the union (achieved statehood) after 1900.

Answer: Alaska

The two possible answers for this question were Alaska and New Mexico. New Mexico had to be used for the New question, leaving only Alaska. There were only five states admitted to the union in the 1900s: Oklahoma (1907), New Mexico (1912), Arizona (1912), Alaska (1959), and Hawaii (1959).
