Lost in Sweden Trivia Quiz

I spent some time lost in Norway, so it's no surprise that I managed to make my way across the border to Sweden and get lost there as well instead of heading home. Come along with me on my journey of discovery.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The picture is of Sweden's oldest town. Which of these is it?

Answer: Sigtuna

Sigtuna is over 1,000 years old, dating from about 980 AD. It is situated on Lake Mälaren about 30 miles (50 km) from Stockholm. In the past, Sigtuna was an important town and has many relics of Sweden's mediaeval past. The museum has artefacts from the Stone Age, the age of the Vikings and more recent historic items.

The picture shows Sigtuna's Old Town Hall.
2. Sweden's highest mountain is Kebnekaise. What is the English translation of this name?

Answer: Cauldron Crest

The mountain is north of the Arctic Circle with the nearest town being Kiruna, Sweden's most northerly. The mountain has two main peaks, both of them just under 7,000 feet (just over 2,00 kilometres) in height. The mountain was formed by glaciation and still has glaciers to be negotiated by climbers. The name comes from the Sami language - the Samis being the indigenous inhabitants of the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and some areas of Russia.

The photo clue gave you some witch's paraphernalia to look at, since they are regularly shown stirring up potions in cauldrons.
3. Stockholm's Vasa Museum is which type of museum?

Answer: Maritime

The Vasa Museum was opened in 1990, having been constructed to house a ship called the Vasa. The ship sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 having covered a distance of only 1,400 yards (1,300 metres). The ship was salvaged in 1961 and was found to be pretty much intact. The dramatic sinking was due to too much weight being placed above deck, not so much due to the armaments she carried but to faults inherent in the design. Although the ship is in a purpose built museum, keeping her intact is an ongoing battle against the ravages of time.

The photo is of a ship's figurehead.
4. Which of these is the name (different spellings can be found) of Sweden's southernmost historic county?

Answer: Scania

Scania, now called Skåne County, is located right at the southern tip of Sweden and is one of the country's smallest regions. Because of the area's proximity to Denmark, it was fought over by the two nations who both laid claim to it. It is home to Ale's Stones, a grouping of boulders in the shape of a ship, which are at least 1,400 years old, although it has been claimed that they could have been put in place more than 5,000 years ago.

The photo clue is of a lorry, or truck, manufactured by the Scania AB company, which was partly based in the region. If you enlarged it, the name is visible on the front.
5. Sweden is a monarchy and Carl XVI Gustaf has been king since 1973. Which princess, sharing her name with a long reigning monarch of a different country, is heir apparent?

Answer: Victoria

Carl XVI Gustaf succeeded his grandfather, as his father had died in an air crash in 1947. Victoria is his eldest child, born in 1973, and was not the heir at the time as her younger brother was first in line. The line of succession was legally changed in January 1980 so that the eldest child, male or female, would succeed and Victoria was moved into first place. Her own eldest child is Princess Estelle, who is next in line with her younger brother, Oscar, in third place at the time of writing.

The photo clue shows a gold sovereign, dated 1887, which places it during the reign of Britain's Queen Victoria.
6. The photo shows part of Stockholm known as Gamla Stan. What do these words mean in English?

Answer: Old Town

Narrow Lane might seem a more appropriate translation, looking at the picture, but the correct answer is Old Town because that's what it is - a very old town. The area is located predominantly on an island named Stadsholmen, which has several bridges to connect it to other parts of Stockholm. The area dates from mediaeval times, the thirteenth century, and has cobbled streets and buildings from that era. Also located there is Stockholm's Royal Palace, the official residence of Sweden's monarchy although not often used as such.

The photo is of Mårten Trotzigs gränd, the narrowest alley in Gamla Stan, measuring under 36 inches (90 cm) in places. I'm not sure if I'd fit through there.
7. Uppsala is the seat of the Archbishop of the Church of Sweden and also has the oldest of which of these establishments in Sweden?

Answer: University

Uppsala is around 45 miles (70 km) north of Stockholm and is Sweden's fourth largest city. Its gothic style cathedral dates from the fifteenth century as does the university, founded just a little later than the cathedral, in 1477. As well as being the oldest in Sweden, it is the longest established in any Nordic country to still be providing education. Among the world renowned Swedes to have studied there are scientists Carl Linnaeus and Anders Celsius and author August Strindberg.

The photo clue shows a blackboard and chalk, although I doubt there will be many of those visible at the twenty-first century university.
8. The Öresund Bridge has become more widely known to many of us due to the television programmes which have featured it. It links Denmark to Sweden, with the Swedish terminus being near which southern city?

Answer: Malmö

The bridge has featured in a television series, shown in the UK with subtitles, about murders on and around the Oresund Bridge. The bridge links the two Scandinavian countries, including a part which runs underwater in a tunnel, and opened in 2000. In Denmark, the route starts on the island of Amager where the tunnel takes you to a manmade island named Peberholm, with the Swedish terminus being near Malmö, Sweden's third largest city. Malmö dates from the thirteenth century.

The photo is a literal one for this question, to give you an idea of what the bridge looks like.
9. Sampling Swedish food is one of the highlights of any visit. One speciality is their meatballs, but what name will appear on the menu?

Answer: Köttbullar

Swedish meatballs have a distinctive taste and are often smaller than those from other countries. Many of us will have sampled them while visiting that other Swedish icon, Ikea, provider of furniture designed to baffle you during assembly. Their name means meat bun when translated into English.

The other dishes are also traditionally Swedish, with smörgåsbord being a buffet style assortment of various dishes while gravlax is made from salmon. Isterband is a type of sausage.
10. With a surface area of over 2,000 square miles (more than 5,000 square kilometres), what is the name of Sweden's largest lake?

Answer: Vänern

Lake Vänern is huge, with only Russia's Onega and Ladoga being bigger as lakes found entirely within the continent of Europe. In surface area it is nearly three times bigger than Sweden's second largest lake, Vättern. Vänern is located in south western Sweden and is renowned for its fish, particularly salmon, and its wild birds.

The photo gives an indication of the sheer size of the lake.
