1. Malaysia consists of thirteen states and three federal territories. There are eleven states and two federal territories in Peninsular Malaysia (West Malaysia). The remaining are located on Borneo Island (East Malaysia). What are the two states of Malaysia that are located on Borneo Island?

Answer: Sarawak and Sabah

The eleven states in Peninsular Malaysia are Perlis, Pulau Pinang (Penang), Kedah, Perak, Selangor, Melaka (Melacca), Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu. Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia, which is also one of the two federal territories in Peninsular Malaysia.

The other one is Putrajaya. Meanwhile, Sarawak and Sabah are located in East Malaysia. Labuan Island is another federal territory that is located somewhere between Sabah and Sarawak. Sarawak is the biggest state. On the other hand, the smallest state is Perlis, which is located to the top left corner of the country alongside Thailand.
2. What are the four colours that appear on a Malaysia's flag?

Answer: Red, blue, yellow and white

The Malaysian flag resembles the USA flag. It consists of 14 stripes with alternate red and white colour. However, in the Malaysian flag, there is a crescent and a 14-pointed star instead of 50 stars on the USA flag. The yellow crescent is a symbol to show that Malaysia is an Islamic country, with Islam as its official religion.
3. The highest mountain in Malaysia is ________.

Answer: Mount Kinabalu

Mount Kinabalu is also the highest mountain in South East Asia. It has a peak of 4101 meters. It is located in Sabah state. It is said that the name "Kinabalu" derived from "Aki Nabalu" (a Kadazan word), which means "the revered place of the dead". (Source: www.mount-kinablalu-borneo.com) Meanwhile, Mount Mulu is located at Miri, Sarawak.

It is a popular tourist spot. It is famous for its well-preserved natural formations and it is one of the longest networks of caves in the world. Some people have the opinion that Mulu Cave National Park is the eighth wonder of the world!

Answer: 31 August

Malaysia gained its independence from the British on 31 August 1957. Normally, the celebration will last for almost a fortnight, until 16 September, as 16 September is Malaysia Day. In 2007 all Malaysians celebrated their 50th anniversary of nationhood.

All of these events are celebrated in Malaysia. Malaysia is truly a unique country, which is rich in history and diverse cultures. During the British colonial era, labourers were brought into the country from China and India. Besides Malay, Chinese and Indian, there are also many minorities groups in Sabah and Sarawak, such as Iban, Bidayuh, Kayan, Kenyah, Bajau, Kadazan and others.
10. Which of the following islands is NOT part of Malaysia?

Answer: Phuket Island

Phuket Island is situated in Thailand. Meanwhile, Langkawi Island (in Kedah state), Pangkor Island (in Perak state) and Redang Island (in Terenganu state) are all very famous tourist attractions.
