Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Northern Appalachians - Greenland mountains - Grampians - Cambrians -Scandinavian Caledonides - Byrranga - ?

Answer: Sayan

The Caledonian Orogeny took place during the early Paleozoic era (approximately between 500 and 390 million years ago). It raised the mountains of Scandinavia, Greenland, Scotland, Wales and the Northern part of the Appalachians. Most of these mountains have developed into platforms, due to the long erosion process.
2. Appalachians - Cape Mountains - Ural - Tian Shan - Central Massif - Vosges - Black Forest - Harz - Sudetes - ?

Answer: Ardennes

The second important orogeny - Hercynian - shaped the relief of central Europe and mid-eastern Asia as well as some parts of other continents. It began in the Carboniferous period (about 340 million years ago) and lasted until it reached the peneplaine level (120 million years ago). The name of the orogeny comes from the Harz mountains.
3. Rockies - Andes - Pyrenees - Alps - Carpathians - Caucasus - Taurus -Karakorum - Himalayas - ?

Answer: Pamir

The Alpine system began to form 200 million years ago (in the early Mesozoic), whilst its mountain shaped raisings appeared more recently (60 million years ago). The highest mountain ranges today belong to the Alpine Orogeny: the Himalayas in Asia, the Alps in Europe and the Cordilleras in America.
4. Chomolungma - Aconcagua - Denali (formerly McKinley) - Kilimanjaro - Elbrus - Puncak Jaya -?

Answer: Vinson

These are the highest peaks on each continent. There are dozens of climbers who have reached all of the seven summits. The first one to succeed in this superhuman race was Canadian Pat Morrow, in 1986.
5. Etna - Vesuvius - Thira (Santorin) - Vulcano (Aria) - ?

Answer: Stromboli

The volcanoes in the Mediterranean are famous for their violent eruptions. History recorded at least two major events that involved these unpredictable giants: the eruption of Thira, which may have caused the downfall of the legendary Atlantis and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D, covering the Roman city of Pompeii.

Not to be forgotten are the over 250 eruptions of Mount Etna in Sicily.
6. Orizaba - Popcatepetl - Tajumulco - Irazu - Pelee - Chimborazo -?

Answer: Cotopaxi

Another lava and ash swept region in the world is the Central-South American one. The listed volcanoes (which, except for Mount Pelee, all belong to the notorious Pacific 'Ring of Fire') emerged in a very unstable area, at the triple junction of the Nazca, Cocos and Caribbean plates.
7. Semeru - Merapi - Bromo - Karangetang - Lokon - Ijen - Tambora - ?

Answer: Krakatau

Also included in the 'Ring of Fire' are the Indonesian volcanoes (more than 50). The most famous of them is Krakatau and his devastating eruption from 1883, which claimed an estimated 37000 deaths, mainly caused by the huge tsunamis it generated.
8. Everest - Kanchenjunga - Lhotse - Makalu - Cho Oyu - Dhaulagiri - Nanga Parbat -Gosainthan - ?

Answer: Annapurna

The Himalayas are the highest mountain range in the world and these are the facts to prove it. There are nine peaks over 8000 m. The first one to be reached was Annapurna, in 1950, by French mountaineers: M. Herzog and L. Lachenal.
9. Sinai - Athos - Olympus - Tabor - Hira - Arunachala - Himalayas - Fuji - Machu Picchu - Haleakala - ?

Answer: Ararat

Virtually every culture has perceived mountains as a metaphoric path towards divinity and ultimate knowledge. From Greece (Olympus, Athos) to Turkey (Ararat), Egypt (Sinai), Saudi Arabia (Hira) and Israel(Tabor), from Peru (Machu Picchu), to Hawaii (Haleakala), Japan (Fuji), India (Arunachala) and Nepal (Himalayas), these sacred mountains and many others have been centers of spirituality and places of divine revelation .
10. Chamonix - Val d'Isere - Albertville - Moritz - Verbier - Zermatt - Grindelwald - Garmisch-Parten - Cervinia - Sestriere - Cortina - ?

Answer: Kitzbuhel

Tourism comes hand-in-hand with mountains and this combination flourished all over the world. The Alps offer some of the best resorts you can find, whether you chose France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany or Austria.
