Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What Otago town sits on a shore of a lake whose name means "Spreading water" in Maori?

Answer: Waihola

Waihola is a town just a few kilometers south of Mosgiel, one of Dunedin's outer suburbs. A common joke there is about a town called Waikikamukau (why kick a moo cow) but it doesn't actually exist.
2. Why was filling of the Clyde dam hydro lake halted after it was completed?

Answer: Rock Slides

The Clyde dam is the biggest concrete dam in Otago and took many years to complete. It caused the town of Cromwell to be relocated because the lake would submerge it. When they finally completed the dam, rock slides in the gorge could have created a flash flood wiping out towns further down the river.

It took several years to eliminate all the potential rock fall areas before Lake Dunstan was filled.
3. Gibbston Valley Winery is directly across the road from which thrill-seeking adventure tourism attraction?

Answer: Bungy jumping

Gibbston Valley Winery sits across the road from A.J Hackett's first bungy jumping spot, on the Kawarau River's historical suspension bridge. Many more locations were to follow, each higher than the last. It is recommended that jumpers try this one before attempting higher jumps.
4. Lee Stream is a small locality in the hills west of Dunedin. The children of the school are provided with home schooling supplies since they often miss school due to which natural phenomena?

Answer: Heavy snow

Lee Stream is high in the hills and gets a lot of snow in winter. The children and teachers have problems getting to the school during heavy snow so the children have lessons at home when this occurs.
5. The area around the small Central Otago town Roxburgh is one of New Zealand's largest producers of which two fruits?

Answer: Apricots and cherries

All of these fruits are grown in some capacity in the Roxburgh area but apricots and cherries are easily the largest crop. New Zealand's largest cherry grower, Cherrycorp, is near Roxburg, and Roxdale apricots have a tinning and packaging factory beside their orchards.
6. The small Lake Hayes near Arrowtown is a popular place for outdoor activities. Which proposed change to the area in the mid 1990s caused a uproar by many of the local residents?

Answer: Construction of a resort hotel

There was a proposed development of a resort hotel to be built on the shore of the lake but it was met with anger and opposition due to the pollution and noise it would create. The idea was abandoned. Although the runway was lengthened to make it long enough for large aircraft several years later, it didn't interfere with the lake.
7. Which town was the first in the area to build a Hollywood-style sign on a hill near the town?

Answer: Mosgiel

In the early 90s a huge "Mosgiel" sign was built on the side of a small hill at the eastern edge of the town beside the motorway. Although not as big as the Hollywood sign it is still clear which town you are entering. Mosgiel is one of the larger suburbs of Dunedin but many locals will tell you it's separate. Alexandra got a huge clock built on the hillside before Mosgiel got its sign but its not like the Hollywood sign.
8. Stuart Landsborough's Puzzling World is closest to which Central Otago town?

Answer: Wanaka

Stuart Landsborough's Puzzling World is a complex near the tourist hot spot Wanaka. It was opened in 1973 with just a single level maze but over the years has been expanded to be the world's first 3D maze with overhead walkways and bridges. There are a number of rooms with optical illusions and a puzzling cafe where visitors can try a variety of puzzles. No trip to Wanaka is really complete without visiting Puzzling World.
9. At an elevation of 562 metres above sea level, where is the only place in New Zealand accessible by road where you can stand in Westland and Otago simultaneously?

Answer: Haast Pass

Haast Pass is the only place in Otago that one can cross the Southern Alps into Westland by road. At the very top is the border between Otago and Westland so it is possible to be in both provinces at the same time.
10. The Highlanders rugby team strip has the colours of the provincial teams of Otago and Southland in their jersey, but which stadium is the home base of the Highlanders?

Answer: Forsythe Barr Stadium, Dunedin

Forsythe Barr is the largest of these three stadiums, Carrisbrook being the former base before it was moved to the new larger roofed stadium in 2011. The Highlanders occasionally play in Invercargill but Oamaru's stadium is too small for Super Rugby matches. However, often the North Otago team play there in the Heartland Championship.
