Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Seville, Sierra Morena mountains, Sierra Nevada National Park

Answer: Andalusia

The Andalusia region is the southern-most autonomous region of Spain. Seville is its capital, is the fourth largest city in Spain and shares its name with the Seville oranges that once used to be the only oranges planted in Europe. The Sierra Morena mountains roughly translate as 'dark range', and span across several Andalusian provinces, with the tallest mountain being Bañuela at 1332 meters.

The Sierra Nevada National Park includes twenty peaks and has wildlife such as the Spanish ibex and golden eagle.
2. Palma de Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza

Answer: Balearic Islands

The Balearic Islands can be found off of the east coast of Spain and are most associated with holiday islands. An extremely large proportion of the inhabitants of the capital, Palma de Mallorca, work in tourism. Menorca's name derives from its relatively small size in comparison to Mallorca and it is known for prehistoric stone artifacts indicating early human activity. Ibiza is of course known for its vivid nightlife and when grouped with nearby Formentera island is known as one of the Pine Islands.
3. Las Palmas, Tenerife, Fuerteventura

Answer: Canary Islands

The Canaries are a fair hike from Spain and can be found off of the coast of Morocco. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is this region's capital, intriguingly similarly named to the Palma of the Balearic Islands. Tenerife is the largest and most populated island and is known for its tall volcanic peak, Mount Teide, which happens to be Spain's tallest mountain at 3718m. Fuerteventura is the second largest island, nicknamed the 'island of eternal spring' due to its pleasant weather.
4. City of Arts and Sciences, Alicante, Benidorm

Answer: Valencian Community

The Valencian Community is an eastern autonomous region which has a fairly long border on the Mediterranean coast. The City of Arts and Sciences isn't a nickname for the capital - which you may have noticed I'd skipped - but is an expensive complex including things like a planetarium, opera house and science museum found in Valencia. Alicante, a historic port, can be found in the province that shares its name. Benidorm might be known to British people through its exposure in the TV show 'Benidorm', featuring rowdy British tourists.

Although it had been a tourist hub for longer, Benidorm turned some of its attention away from its fishing industries to focus on its tourism in the 1950s.
5. Logroño, Calahorra, Bodegas Tritium

Answer: La Rioja

La Rioja is a small landlocked autonomous region in the north of Spain which has a large border with Castilla y León on the west and south, and which also borders the Basque Country, Navarre and Aragon. Logroño is its capital and largest city by quite some way, although small compared with some of the largest Spanish cities on the whole. Calahorra is the second-largest city, whose claim to fame is that it was the birthplace of the Latin teacher Quintilian. Bodegas Tritium is one of the wineries in the region and is in the town of Cenicero; according to its website it is a restoration of a 15th century winery.
6. Barcelona, Abbey of Montserrat, Dali Theatre and Museum

Answer: Catalonia

Catalonia is the northeastern autonomous region in Spain and has four provinces: Barcelona, Girona, Lleida, and Tarragona. Barcelona is its capital and the second largest city in the country. The Abbey of Montserrat, also known as Santa Maria de Montserrat, is associated with the Madonna and Child statue often called the Virgin of Montserrat.

Although there is also a Salvador Dali museum in the US, this one in Figueres is where Dali was buried. It is built in an old theatre Dali knew in his youth, and he was taken with the idea of his museum being like a 'theatrical dream'.
7. Albacete, Guadalajara, Toledo

Answer: Castilla-La Mancha

Castilla-La Mancha is a centrally located autonomous region and in spite of being the third largest of the regions is relatively sparsely populated. It lacks an official capital city, but Albacete is its largest. Not to be confused with the place in Mexico, Guadalajara is the second largest city in the region and used to be associated with the powerful Mendoza family. Toledo is perhaps more familiar by name and is an UNESCO World Heritage Site associated with cultural influences from Christians, Jews and Muslims.
8. Valladolid, Burgos Cathedral, Sanabria Lake

Answer: Castile y Leon

Castile y Leon is the largest of the autonomous regions, yet is also relatively sparsely populated for its size. Valladolid is the de facto capital of the region and is also its largest city, known for its National Museum of Sculpture. The Burgos Cathedral is a World Heritage Site built in the 13th century in the French Gothic style of architecture.

In the Zamora province, the Sanabria Lake can be found, one of the few significant natural lakes in Spain.
9. Barajas International Airport, Móstoles, Alcalá de Henares

Answer: Community of Madrid

The Community of Madrid is central, small, and densely populated since it contains the country's capital city. The Barajas International Airport is found within the city of Madrid; in 2014 it was officially named the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport to honour the former Prime Minister Adolfo Suárez. Móstoles is another significant city in the region and is home to the Rey Juan Carlos University. Alcalá de Henares is a World Heritage Site and was designed to be a university town in the Renaissance period.
10. Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, San Sebastian

Answer: Basque Country

Basque Country is roughly a centre-north located community bordering the Bay of Biscay to the north, Cantabria to the west, La Rioja to the south and both France and Navarre to the east. Bilbao is its largest city, though it has no official capital. The second largest city, Vitoria-Gasteiz, is often considered a de facto capital due to it having numerous government buildings and functions there. San Sebastian (or Donostia) is the third-largest city in the region and is a tourist attraction renowned for its music festivals.
