More then 200 ships fought each other in that battle. The battle of Leyte Gulf is often claimed to be the largest naval battle but in fact there were three seperate battles (Surigao Strait, Samar, Cape Engano) which took place at locations more then 500 miles away from each other.

The Battle of Jutland took place from 31st May 1916 to 1st June 1916. The Battle of Dogger Bank took place on 24 January 1915.

Johann Wilhelm Kinau, better known as Gorch Fock, was a famous German poet. In World War I he was a stoker on SMS Wiesbaden and died in the battle. The famous current training sailing ship of the German navy is named Gorch Fock.

HMS Defence, Warrior and Black Prince belonged to the 1st Cruiser Squadron (Rear Admiral Arbuthnot). HMS Defence, the flagship, was blown up by German battleships at around 18.14 hours. HMS Warrior received heavy damage in the same firefight but managed to escape, but she sunk the following day due to her heavy damage. HMS Black Prince was sunk by the German battleships Westfalen and Rheinland in the nightfight when mistakenly trying to enqueue in the German battle line.

When her crew finally recognized their mistake it was too late.

She received three or four broadsides from the German battleships and after seconds she was just a glowing piece of metal. No one survived. HMS Invincible was blown in half by SMS Luetzow and Derfflinger at around 18.30 when a shell hit the P and Q magazines.

SMS Goeben was in the Meditarrenean when the war broke out. Togehter with SMS Breslau she formed the German Meditarrenean Squadron. She was officially sold to Turkey and operated in the Dardanelles and the Black Sea during the war (but in fact she was still under German command and the German crew remained on board).

Although severely damaged several times she survived the war and served in the Turkish navy until 1960. The Turkish government offered the ship to the German government but the Germans reject the offer and so the ship was sold for scrap in the 1970's. SMS Breslau was sunk by mines in 1918 with great losses.

At around 14.00 hours both sides were heading north only a few miles away from each other just behind the horizon. At around 14.15 hours the light British cruiser HMS Galatea sighted smoke coming from the small danish merchant ship N.J. Fjord. Galatea changed course to investigate the ship.

At the same time the smoke from the N.J. Fjord was sighted by the German light cruiser SMS Elbing. Admiral Hipper detached two torpedo boats to recon. So both sides sighted each other, and the battle started at around 14.28 hours.

HMS Australia was the only British battlecruiser which did not take part in the battle because of a collision with HMS New Zealand a few weeks before the battle. HMS New Zealand was repaired in time for the battle unlike HMS Australia.
