Answer: Judah

This chapter in Genesis reports that Judah hired a veiled woman for sexual purposes. She asked for a young goat for her services. It turns out that she was actually Judah's daughter-in-law, but he didn't realize it at the time because of the veil.
2. Religious authorities of the Aztecs and Incas believed that women who chose to be prostitutes should do so only at buildings called "Cihuacalli". What is the English translation of that Nahuatl word?

Answer: House of Women

Rooms surrounded a patio in the Cihuacalli. The patio had a shrine to the goddess Tlazolteotl. She was the goddess of many thngs including purification, midwives and adulterers. Women were encouraged by religious authorities to work as prostitutes if they wished, but were to do so only at these places that were guarded by Tlazolteotl.
3. The English word "pornography" is derived from the Ancient Greek word for prostitute.

Answer: True

The Ancient Greek word for prostitute is "porne", which comes from the Greek verb pernemi (to sell). Both women and boys acted as prostitutes in Ancient Greece, with some charging very large fees for their services. Prostitutes in Ancient Greece were required to pay taxes on their earnings.
4. In the 1600s in Japan, oiran, or y¨ąjo were known as "women of pleasure", or prostitutes. Besides sexual services, what other services did these women offer their clients?

Answer: Performances of dance, music, poetry and calligraphy.

Besides entertaining their clients and providing sexual services, the oiran were also expected to be well-educated so they could carry on a well-informed conversation. The last oiran is thought to have practiced in the early 1760s.
5. In the context of the history of prostitution, what is a "kagema"?

Answer: Historical Japanese term for male prostitute.

Kagema were male prostitutes, typically employed by other men. They were affiliated with kabuki theatre, male brothels and certain teahouses that were known as Kagemajaya. Kagema typically charged more than female prostitutes of equivalent status, and continued in Japan into the mid-19th century when laws changed and the activities were restricted.
6. Prostitution in Ancient Rome was illegal, but tolerated.

Answer: False

Prostitution in Ancient Rome was actually a legal activity. All men were allowed to hire prostitutes without fear of retribution as long as they showed some constraint and did not engage prostitutes too often.
7. In the early 16th century, what occurred that made prostitution less attractive in Europe?

Answer: Outbreaks of syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases.

An outbreak of syphilis started in Naples in 1494 and swept across Europe. That, plus many other sexually transmitted diseases being common amongst prostitutes led society to begin to shun brothels because they were associated with these diseases.
8. What was the first American city to legalize prostitution?

Answer: St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis legalized prostitution in 1870 with the "social evil ordinance". Prostitutes were required to be licensed, practice their trade in a brothel, and to have regular inspections for sexually transmitted diseases. The legislation that allowed prostitution in St. Louis bawdy houses was repealed in 1874 after demonstrations by members of the public and a change in the political opinion.
9. How did most Communist leaders feel about prostitution in the 20th century?

Answer: Most did not agree with it, publicly stating their opposition.

All men who developed the Communist theories objected to prostitution. Marx, Engels, and Lenin all wrote about their distaste for prostitution and how they felt it important to eradicate it. Most Communist governments took to try to eradicate the profession, with little or no success.
10. A quiz about the history of prostitution wouldn't be complete without at least one question about Amsterdam. Why is the area there where one can engage a prostitute in that city known as the "red light district"?

Answer: Red lights burn in the windows where prostitutes work.

Amsterdam used to be a port city, so it attracted prostitutes as early as the 15th century where they serviced sailors. Women used to solicit men from the streets and the doorways in the oldest part of town. In the 1960s, it became illegal to solicit from doorways, so women moved to the windows of their brothels. That was tolerated by police as long as the curtains were mostly closed.

The prostitutes would burn a red light in the window to make it clear that there was a prostitute there. Today, curtains can stay open, but the red lights remain.
