After a restructuring process, various areas with the Canadian National Railway company were brought into a new division known as Terra Transport. This new division made various changes to rail services in the province of Newfoundland, most notably the replacement of boxcars with flatcars that could be stacked with shipping containers. In 1987, railways in Newfoundland were deregulated and abandoned completely by 1990 and, as a result, Terra Transport ceased operations in 1988.

This merger was particularly important in the province of Quebec as it established a new hockey rivalry between the Montreal Canadiens and Quebec Nordiques known as the "Battle of Quebec".

This rivalry was so intense that it included an infamous brawl in 1984 known as the "Good Friday Massacre", multiple playoff matchups, and a political rivalry between the two teams who were owned by competing breweries Carling-O'Keefe (Quebec) and Molson (Montreal).
