Answer: Iowa

The 14th Iowa was the first to take up the position and the 12th Iowa was the last to leave it. Grant said, "Iowa is a young state, but it is a state of heros; those Iowa boys saved my Army."

Uncle Billy, as the men called him, didn't like the feel of boots when he was riding his horse Sam, named after Grant. He said it was to hard to think with boots on.

After the fall of Fort Donelson, Albert S. Johnston told Governor Harris to get the state records out of Nashville. Don Carlos Buell was the General in charge of the Union forces that captured Nashville, with very little opposition. Both Lincoln and Halleck had been against the move on Nashville. Febuary 24, 1862 was the day that Nashville was captured.

Answer: Murfreesboro

Murfreesboro or Stones River a part of the battlefield was called The Round Forest. It earned the name "Hell's Half-Acre for the hard fighting that happened there. After the first day Bragg telegraphed Davis to say he had won a great victory. The next day Breckenridge's men, as they advanced, were cut down by cannon located on a nearby hillside, as Breckenridge had predicted.

But Bragg still ordered the charge. It did little but add to the Confederate casualties.

Meigs was a southerner that had stayed loyal, who hated the men who did not stay loyal. So it was an easy choice to take Lee's home. Meig's son John, would soon be buried there.
