Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the first regiment tendered to government service at the beginning of the war?

Answer: 1st Minnesota

The Governor of Minnesota was in Washington when the war broke out. He promptly offered to raise an infantry regiment from his state for government service. However, the regiment didn't get to the capital until much later. It was also the only Union regiment in what would be the Army of the Potomac from west of the Mississippi.
2. Which southern state provided the Union with the most Federal Units?

Answer: Tennessee

The state of Tennessee provided the Union with 38 fine units to preserve the Federal government (compared to 264 that tried to dissolve it). However, it is not a surprise that so many turned out to fight for the North. At the outbreak of the war, many thought Tennessee would not even secede.
3. The CSA Confederate battle flag, or Southern Cross, has 13 stars.

Answer: True

There were only 11 states in the CSA, but two additional stars were included, one for Missouri and one for Kentucky.
4. What was the original name of "Burnside's Bridge"?

Answer: Rohrbach Bridge

It was named Rohrbach Bridge after a local family - not that those who fought there under Burnside ever knew that.
5. The CSS Virginia and Merrimack were the same ship.

Answer: True

Originally the Merrimack, when she was converted to an ironclad in Confederate service she was renamed the Virginia.
6. How many men died during the Battle of Gettysburg?

Answer: 6,000

The armies suffered a combined 53,000 casualties- dead, wounded, or missing, not 53,000 fatalities. The death toll was only 6,000.
7. Who said, "It's just like shooting squerrils, only the squerrils have guns" to his new recruits?

Answer: An anonymous Federal veteran

An intereseting quote. However, the war wasn't that simple and many of those new recruits would run away from the "squirrels."
8. Who said, "I shall come out of this fight a live Major General, or a dead Brigadier"?

Answer: Brig. Gen. Albert Perrin

He came out a dead Brigadier at the Battle of Spotsylvania.
9. "That from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the _________________ of devotion"

Answer: last full measure

A quote from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address
10. Where was the last battle of the Civil War fought?

Answer: Palmito Ranch, Texas

Ironically, the Confederates won the battle.
