On the morning of 24th March 1999, a Belgian transport truck carrying flour and margarine entered the French entrance and caught fire in the tunnel, killing 39 people. The fire lasted 53 hours and reached 1,000 degrees Celsius (1,830 degrees Fahrenheit).

It took more than five days for the tunnel to cool enough to begin repairs. All the deceased were on the French side and were ultimately reduced to bones and ash.
