Bonaparte left on with 34,000 troops, but also took 1,000 civilians, who were mainly administrators, but were also to compile the "Descriptions de l'Egypte".
2. Who commanded the Mamelukes who fought at the Battle of the Pyramids?

Answer: Murad Bey

Ibrahim Bey was with the main army at the time of the battle, but Murad Bey was in command of the vanguard of the Mamelukes which fought Napoleon. Ibrahim Bey's army then retreated. Djezzar Pasha commanded the Syrians, and Nelson the British fleet.
3. How many casualties did the Mamelukes suffer at the Battle of the Pyramids?

Answer: 6,000

The French inflicted approximately 6,000 casualties upon the Mamelukes, but the majority escaped due to the lack of cavalry in Napoleon's army.

This decided the Battle of Aboukir, when cavalry led by Murat, captured Mustapha Pasha. Kleber was left in charge of the French Army in Egypt when Bonaparte returned to France.

Answer: 22nd August 1799

Napoleon was to return and take power in France in the coup of 18 Brumaire, leaving the army in Egypt for another two years under the command of General Kleber. The troops in Egypt eventually capitulated in 1801, after the loss of over 13,000 men.
