Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Romans punished what ancient empire severely after defeating them in the Punic Wars?

Answer: Carthage

The Punic Wars were wars ended in the downfall of Carthage. Most of the Carthaginians died during the war due to starvation or dying in combat. Many of the survivors were murdered, and others were sold into slavery. It was, in effect, an act of genocide. 'Carthago delenda est' ('Carthage must be destroyed [wiped out]') was meant quite literally. All of Carthage's land was seized by the Roman Republic.
2. When Europeans first set foot in the Americas, they enslaved or killed many Native Americans. Which of these groups in the Iroquois did NOT side with the British at the time of the Revolutionary War in order to try to gain back land lost?

Answer: Oneida

The Iroquois are split into six subgroups. The Mohawk, Seneca, Cayuga, and Onondaga all sided with the British, while the Oneida and Tuscarora sided with the Americans. Since Britain still owned Canada, some Native Americans moved to Canada and received better rights than they did in America, as a reward for being loyal.
3. As European settlement in North America progressed, slavery became a more prominent issue. What country in the Caribbean became the first country in Latin America to break free from its European Power?

Answer: Haiti

Haiti broke free following a civil war led by General Toussaint L'Ouverture. In order to try to defeat their enemy, Britain and Spain sided with the Haitian slaves in order to weaken France.
4. What group, a minority in several empires at the end of the 19th century, was discriminated against, deported, starved and subjected to genocide by the Ottoman Empire during World War I?

Answer: Armenians

This was in part due to religious conflicts, as the Turks were primarily Muslim and the Armenians were primarily Christian. The Ottoman government also claimed that 'the Armenians' were systematically deserting to the Russians in World War I. About 1.5 million Armenians were killed in a dark period in world history, and Turkey denies ever having committed genocide.
5. The Rowlatt Acts, passed by Britain in 1919, had the effect of denying people in what British-ruled country their right to a fair trial?

Answer: India

The Rowlatt Acts declared that any protesting Indian could be jailed without trial. Many Indians with a western education realized that this violated their right to a fair trial, and this was a fruther issue that fueled the fight for Indian Independence.
6. During the early days of the Soviet Union, Stalin forcibly took the grain from what primarily agrarian Eastern European country and let approximately 3 million of its people starve?

Answer: Ukraine

In 1932-33 during a severe famine in Ukraine, Stalin, having forced Ukrainians to work on collective farms, shipped the grain to Russia to feed urban workers. The results were devastating. There is much disagreement about the death toll, but many modern estimates are in the region of 3 million.
7. The "Rape of Nanking," a prolonged, violent attack on Chinese civilians, was initiated by what foreign power?

Answer: Japan

The results were staggering. Over 40,000 Chinese people were killed, with many others being raped or robbed. Two (!) members of the Imperial Japanese Army who led the attack were later executed for war crimes, and a few others were later imprisoned as the Rape of Nanking occurred during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
Estimates of the total number of civilians killed range from 40,000 to 200,000 but these estimates depend in many cases on the geographical area chosen. The low figures usually include only killings that took place in the town itself.
8. After World War II, many Japanese POW Camp officers were punished for human rights violations. Which guard, however, was not punished, due to staying in hiding until after the trials for Japanese war criminals had ended?

Answer: Mutsuhiro Watanabe

Mutsuhiro Watanabe was nicknamed 'The Bird' by inmates and was known for his extremely erratic behavior. He hid until 1953, when he received a newspaper pamphlet saying war crime trials had ended.
9. Kurdish people have been discriminated against in the Middle East for decades. In which country will you NOT find a significant Kurdish population?

Answer: Afghanistan

Kurdish people live in semi autonomous republics in some of the countries that they inhabit, but in others are left to fend for themselves. They are subject to discrimination at the hands of majority Arab, Persian, and Turkish populations.
10. Cornelia Rau, a German citizen, was arbitrarily detained by what nation after being suspected of being an illegal immigrant?

Answer: Australia

Cornelia Rau was detained for a period of 10 months despite being a legal permanent resident of Australia. Mentally ill, she was deprived of her medication, and wasn't released until a newspaper article referenced her.
