Construction began on the World Trade Center complex in 1966 and was finished in 1972. It was designed by American architect, Minoru Yamasaki. It was developed by the Port Authority of NYC.

The Twin Towers (#1 & #2 WTC; North an South Towers) were considered the tallest in the country when completed in January 1972. This lasted for three years until May 1973 when the buildings were overtaken by the Sear's Tower in Chicago.

The plans called for seven buildings with #1 & #2 WTC being the taller ones. The other buildings would b of a low-rise office buildings which would house a hotel, offices, and the U.S. Customs Ofices. Number3 WTC would be the hotel which was situated between the two towers.

Actually, the one tower was slightly taller. Number 1 WTC was 1368 ft. tall while #2 WTC was 1362 ft. tall. This height difference was because the Port Authority had a request to make two of the floors slightly taller in#1 WTC (Fl. 43 & 67) with Floor #43 housing a cafeteria for the PANY (Port Authority of New York).

At around 8:45 AM, American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower. It struck between Floors 93 & 99; killing hundreds instantly including passengers and crew of Flight 11. Landing gear from Flight 11 went through the roof of #3 WTC (Marriott Hotel).

At around 9:03 AM, United Flight 175 struck the South Tower. This flight was caught on camera as crews were filming the attack on the North Tower. The aircraft was estimated to be traveling at nearly 600 miles perhr hour and banked sharply to the left to slam into the South Tower. Part of the fuselage from this aircraft landed on #5 WTC.

This airliner struck the South Tower between Floors 73 & 84.

In #2 WTC, Flight 175 damaged two of the three stairwell shafts except one. This one was considered the "miracle stairwell" because it was unblocked from the impact and many people were able to utilize it to get out safely from above the impact zone of Flight 175.

There were 20 people pulled from the rubble. Among those were two Port Authority police officers who were portrayed in the movie "World Trade Center". There was also a woman who was pulled out from the North Tower when she became trapped on what was left of the 4th floor stairwell.

She had climbed down from the 73rd floor of the North Tower, but had stopped because of exhaustion and injury to a leg. Along with her was the two firefighters that were working to help her down and out of the building before the North Tower collapsed.
