Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Akin to a coconut shy, my grandfather made a stand on which four hinged wooden heads were fixed. Whose head did we try and knock over?

Answer: Aunt Sally

There are several theories as to how the game got its name, but the aim is the same in each, to knock the head over. In the original game, wooden batons were likely to be used as the weapon that was thrown, but my granny used to bundle up several pairs of old socks (which she had originally knitted!) and sew them into a ball to use instead. It was probably safer that way!
2. It's not baseball or softball, but what game did I play at primary school, where we hit the ball with a small bat and ran as fast as we could from base to base?

Answer: rounders

While we used to play a version of rounders for fun, it was also played by grade teams who played against each other. The best of these players would be chosen to play for the school in a competition against schools in the local area.
3. A party favourite of mine was when we all sat in a circle facing one another, and one child walked slowly round the circle, choosing someone to race against. They would drop an item behind the back of the victim. The victim would jump up and the two would race around the circle to be first back to the vacant space. What was this game called?

Answer: Drop the hanky

The children ran around the circle in opposite direction - which would result in a spectacular crash in they weren't careful. Those known to be slower runners were often the one chosen to race against, of course!
4. As a child, I loved playing table tennis with my brother - but by what proprietary name did we know the game?

Answer: Ping-pong

Ping-Pong was the onomatopoeic name Parker Brothers used for their table tennis equipment around the turn of the 20th century.
5. In which game could I not only get a head, but eyes, mouth and nose also?

Answer: Mr. Potato Head

One of the neighbour's children and I would spend hours making Picasso-like characters with Mr Potato head and his cronies. Unfortunately, the number of pieces dwindled as they were lost, so it wasn't quite as much fun!
6. One favourite game we played while travelling was a scavenger hunt of objects we might see from the car window, called 'Spotto'. When Dad filled the car with petrol, he'd pick up several sheets of this game from the service station counter for us to play. What company produced these sheets in 1960s Australia?

Answer: British Petroleum

One of the items we had to spot was a speed sign for (from memory) 5 MPH. That was a rare speed at that time and only one anywhere near where we travelled. It was always a race (sometimes an argument) to spot the sign as we came around the corner into the street when the sign was erected.
7. When I was about 8 years old, my brother taught me to play a game played by the strategic placement of pieces...er...one was a horse (I loved horses!), then there was a bishop...and a queen...being a queen appealed to me...oops, I lost focus...what game did my brother invariably beat me at?

Answer: Chess

I'm slightly better at chess now, and play online each day. I haven't played with my brother for years, but have no great confidence I'd beat him now, even so!
8. One game I loved playing with my grandfather was indoor bowls, with a felt mat for the 'lawn'. What domestic pet name, also a contraction of the name Katherine, is given to the ball you're aiming to get closest to when playing lawn or indoor bowls?

Answer: Kitty

The aim is to get your balls closest to the white ball, which is known as the 'kitty' or sometimes as the 'jack'. The closest ball wins the end. In indoor bowls, the felt mat is also sometimes called the 'carpet'.
9. Being a very agile child, I used to love playing which game with at least two other friends, that involved jumping in a series of routine moves at various heights over a stretchy cord, held between the other players or chairs?

Answer: Elastics

Elastics starts off at the ankles and moves to mid-calf, knees, hips, waist, and then neck. We had to complete the routine successfully before moving to the next level. Sometimes we started off standing on the elastics, or land on it during a turn. Other moves included turning 180 degrees in mid-air, or disentangling the elastics as we jumped.
10. On long trips my brother and I used to play a game called 'Squares' (aka Dots and Boxes, and numerous other names). The aim was to make squares by connecting dots on a page. We determined who was the winner by counting the number of dots each person used - true or false?

Answer: False

It was whoever had the greatest number of completed squares that won the game! In order to tell who had completed a square, we would put our initial as we drew the last side. Then it was easy to count up to see who was the winner.
