quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Starting off with the title question, what exactly goes into a Tequila Sunrise?

Answer: Tequila, orange juice and grenadine

A Tequila Sunrise is a very popular cocktail to order. It is so named because of the colour it becomes when the juice and grenadine is added, making it a pinky orange colour, ideally layered from red at the bottom to orange at the top, like you would see in a sunrise.
2. Two men rush in, shouting something about the world being about to be destroyed to make way for a Hyper space bypass, and one seems to be wearing a dressing gown! They ask for a last drink, describing it as being like 'Having your brain smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped around a large gold brick'. What could you possibly serve them?

Answer: Pan galactic gargleblaster

This is of course the drink featured in the series of novels 'The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy'. I only recently found out it was a real drink!
3. The orders are coming quick and fast now, and the next on your list is a drink made from white rum, brown sugar, mint leaves and lots of limes, but what is the name for this cocktail?

Answer: Mojito

A mojito is a lovely refreshing drink which originated from Cuba. It is quite fiddly to make, as you need to muddle the limes and mint, as well as adding sugar to the drink.
4. A group of women have just entered and asked for "The drink made famous by Carrie Bradshaw and friends in the TV show 'Sex and the City'." You know how to make it, but what is it called?

Answer: Cosmopolitan

This very popular drink is made from vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice and lime. It is normally garnished with a twist of either orange or lime peel on the edge of the glass.
5. A couple of literary looking types enter, and request the drink made famous by Bohemian poets and authors, you know it's green and involves mixing with water and heating sugar cubes, but what it is called?

Answer: Absinthe

Absinthe was outlawed in many countries as it was believed to cause hallucinatory effects, and to be harmful to the drinker. Kylie Minogue played a cameo role in the movie 'Moulin Rouge' as the Green Fairy, which Absinthe is often called.
6. After a few minutes breathing space, your next customers are a nice looking couple who are celebrating by ordering Kir Royals. You're a bit shaky on this recipe, it needs vodka, right?

Answer: False

Kir Royals are made with Champagne, or sparkling wine, mixed with Creme de Cassis. There are many types of Kir cocktails, and they originated in France, and is named after Mayor Kir, mayor of Dijon in Burgundy.
7. Your next customer comes in asking for a drink made up of Vodka, orange juice and Galliano, and he knows part of the name of this drink is the same as a giant invisible rabbit. What is the drink this man wants?

Answer: Harvey Wallbanger

A Harvey Wallbanger is made by mixing Vodka and orange juice with ice, and then layering Galliano over the top. The film the man is referencing is 'Harvey' (1950) in which a man's best friend is a giant, invisible rabbit named Harvey, whom only the man can see!
8. Your evening is getting more and more strange, now an Englishman dressed in a dinner jacket has entered, and asked for one 'Shaken, not stirred'. What would he most likely be asking for?

Answer: Martini

A Martini is usually made with either Gin or Vodka, with a splash of Vermouth, and served over ice with an olive to garnish, or a cocktail onion, which turns the drink into a Gibson. This drink was made world famous by the James Bond films.
9. Goodness, first James Bond, and now Anton Chekhov the author has wandered in, (isn't he dead) and is demanding a dark drink that features the name of his homeland! You wrack your brains and come up with a ...

Answer: Black Russian

A bit of a cryptic one there! Black Russians are made in many varieties, but the best known combination seems to be Vodka, Kahlua and ice, all topped up with cola. A White Russian is made using milk instead of cola. Chekhov is of course a famous Russian writer, author of 'The Cherry Orchard' among other works.
10. Finally, its almost the end of your shift! Just one last customer, and it seems to be a little girl holding a large lollypop, who you remember being an Ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia many years ago. You know she is not old enough to drink, so you offer to make her the drink named after her. What is it?

Answer: Shirley Temple

A Shirley Temple drink contains no alcohol, it is usually made with ginger ale, orange juice and grenadine. This was invented for the child star Shirley Temple. Macaulay Culkin starred in the 'Home Alone' films, Drew Barrymore began her film career in 'E.T' and Jodie Foster first became famous playing Tallulah in 'Busgy Malone'. All of these were child stars, but as far a I know, Shirley Temple is the only one with a drink named after her.
